Rationale:

The spaces cause the message to be misaligned with other "subtitle" messages. You can see an example of that at User:Amalthea/rd1, where "(Redirected from User:Amalthea/rd1)" looks indented compared to "Redirect page" and subpage breadcrumbs.
The spaces make it more difficult to make software changes to improve how the "subtitle" messages look, see the discussion about aligning messages in T306675 and T307715.
The spaces were added in 2008 with the explanation that "Message conflicts with subpage message", unfortunately the screenshot linked there is no longer available, and the author @CBM themself is inactive since 2018. There doesn't seem to be any conflict now, as far as I can see.
