DVD-ROM, DVD and DVD-R

DVD-ROM needs to be fusioned with DVD, and maybe it would be apropiate to fusion DVD-R with DVD too. xDCDx 12:22, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I have to agree with User:Xdcdx; I can see no reason for this article to exist. While DVD-ROM strictly means press-manufactured read-only DVD, it could also be loosely applied to any DVD that is not rewritable (just as "CD-ROM" is loosely used in that manner). Most of the article content here is descriptive of DVD in general, rather than DVD-ROM specifically. The reason CD-ROM is separate from compact disc is that compact disc is a physical storage medium, while CD-ROM is a specific standard usage of that storage medium (a compact disc with an ISO9660 filesystem). -- Wapcaplet 19:44, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Rather than just talking about it, I've gone ahead and redirected, without copying anything from this article into DVD. Here's why:

• DVD-ROM is a non-volatile optical data storage medium... The first paragraph explains some of the differences between DVD and CD, and briefly mentions storage size. These concepts are already explained more adequately in DVD, in my assessment.
• There has been some dispute about the meaning of the name... The acronym expansion is better (and more correctly) explained in the DVD article, as is the brief mention of what can be stored on a DVD.
• The use of DVD-ROM for selling prerecorded films has grown at a fast rate... Again, already explained more thoroughly in the DVD article
• Informative DVD-ROMs may contain links to webpages with additional information... This seems fairly immaterial; any data storage medium can contain links. Whatever "Informative DVD" is should be explained in the DVD article, if it's important enough.
