The Bulgarian-Vlach Kingdoms of Wallachia and Moldova were two medieval states which got independent in the middle of the 14th century, to become vassals of the Ottoman Empire in 1453.

The two states were populated by both Bulgarians and Vlachs, the official language of the state and church was, however, only Bulgarian, well until the 17th century when the Bulgarians were eventually assimilated by the Vlach majority. The trace of the Bulgarian population can, however, be clearly seen in the predominantly Slavic toponyms of Wallachia - for example, the name of the old capital of Wallachia, Targovishte (bul. "marketplace).
