Unsolved problems in Egyptology

Specifically: Menes and Narmer. Thanks for the comments on my page about this. I removed the tags because my understanding is that it is not a serious question in this context. In addition to removing the tags, I also added extensively to both entries, and if you take another look at the entries, you'll see where I added fresh material explaining more about the context of each king, and current academic opinion on the matter as I understand it. Your tagging was a good "prod" to me to fill these articles out further, but leaving them in seemed a disservice -- there is no "mystery" if you re-read the articles as they stand now. ;-) Have also removed the problem reference from the UPiE page, since it is not considered an unsolved problem. Ada

Ada is not case sensitive, so "Text_Io" and "Text_IO" are syntactically the same and both are correct. Further, the rest of the example is given in mixed case and not full uppercase. - UtherSRG 23:41, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Your userpage does not exist, so...

Hi Suruena/Archive 1, I've noticed that you currently don't have a userpage. Not a problem in itself, but it makes your name appear as a redlink when signing talk pages, or when seen in Special:Recentchanges. Some users feel that lack of a userpage is an indication that a user may be a troll, sockpuppet, or simply a newbie. One simple solution, if you don't want to create a userpage, is to edit your userpage and insert the following:

#REDIRECT [[User talk:Suruena/Archive 1]]

This will make your userpage a redirect to your talk page. If you ever want to create a user page, follow this link:

Linking to France

I don't see the point of linking France -- as part of the location of the company where he worked -- in the Jean Ichbiah article -- but perhaps there is a Wikipedia policy article that would clarify that. I might understand linking to Louveciennes, France if that existed.... By the way, I worked at the CII-HB labs at Louveciennes at one point.... --Macrakis 23:45, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Alan Burns

Are you sure that the issue of Alan Burns's beard does not deserve to be mentioned in his page? It's something that has affected all the students in the department, which make up a large proportion of those he encounters on a day to day basis. Arguably this is a very significant event in his life and also makes the page factually accurate, as currently it is misleading in suggesting that he has a beard. There are a lot of more important topics in the life of Alan Burns than his beard. Some basic data as date and place of birth, where he studied and with who, and other issues of his life that could be used to understand his work (I don't think his beard can help with this :-), and of course his work (papers, books, next revision of the Ada language), after all this is the reason of deserving an article at Wikipedia. 1 E2 m - category key...

I changed the 1 E2 m category key to be "2", rather than "1 E2 m", so that all the numbers would have their own keys. Now that I think about it, just using the power won't work perfectly, as that will put them out of order, but doing "02" will keep them in order, and let them be seperated into groups. I'd be delighted by help... The tool I wrote is available from my User:JesseW/monobook.js, under the section called Edit automation (ignore the note about it not being used). Just copy it into yours, and add the line window.onload = automate();, and it should automatically make the category key fix when you go to any 1_E[0-9] type page. (It only works on positive numbers, but the change for - is trivial, and I'll make it after we fix all the positive ones.) separator

There isn't a convention (and certainly not a policy or guideline) concerning the separator agter a "dablink"; i raised it at the relevant Talk page, and the consensus was that tit was fine to add it, but that it couldn't be included in the template itself (because people sometimes use the template twice, which would look odd). I much prefer the separator, as it clearly delineates the (irrelevant) reference to another topic. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 13:05, 1 August 2005 (UTC)

rail tracks width - is rail gauge what you're looking for?

Hi. I noticed you added rail tracks width to the list of rail transport articles to write. Is rail gauge (the first sentence of which reads "Rail gauge is the distance between two rails of a railroad") the article that you were looking for? The What links here page for that name lists only the todolist where you added the link. Please stop

Please stop creating redirects for every date for 11th millenium and beyond. It's impractical. Nobody's going to type out such numbers expecting to go there. Please go to every redirect that you have created and add the following text there

WP:AUM

This policy states that we must not use meta-templates. This "qif" templates you are using are being actively discontinued to abide teh policy. dashes

I'm sure you are trying to be helpful, but the Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dashes)#Dash guidelines for Wikipedia editors fairly clearly states:

"Please do not change them to reflect your preference."

Hi William, I'm aware of that guideline, and I always try to respect it. Maybe you saw me replacing hyphens in ranges by an en-dash, which is the correct character. However, this doesn't go against that guideline because it talks about em-dashes and a single spaced hyphen. Actually I sometimes replace some hyphens by em-dashes but only when there isn't a consistent style in the article, and this is considered in the Manual of Style. But sorry if I have changed arbitrarily the style of an article without noticing it. Thanks --surueña 10:50, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Country subdivisions

Holy War (college football)

While I agree with your decision to move Holy War (college football) to Holy War (Boston College vs. Notre Dame) and Holy War (Utah vs. BYU), I think it would have been good of you to discuss this first in the talk page. 18.95.1.28 22:05, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

Lang tags

Hi there! Just a quick note to tell you that chaging [[Portuguese language|Portuguese]]: to {{lang-pt| }} is really not benefitial. Since they produce the same result, and its something that we will probably never need to change in all the pages where such a structure is used, its better to leave it without templates, since its faster for the Wikipedia to process. You might have already seen that some tags are supposed to be used with the subst: command to transform them in code instead of leaving the tag, that's also because of this. Hello, Mariano. The purpose of the {{lang}} and {{lang-xx}} family of templates is to tag non-English words with the HTML lang attribute. For example, template {{lang|pt|Maracanaço}} results in the following code:
<span lang="pt">Maracanaço<span>
This metadata is useful in several contexts, see Template talk:lang. In the future, it is planned creating a Wikipedia guideline to always tag non-English words with these templates. Bye, bye. --surueña 07:39, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I like to use those specific characters in articles because they give a more proffessional look to Wikipedia, and also for web accessibility reasons. Some editors insert the Unicode character directly using the "special characters box" below the edit window. However, I prefer to use character entity references because they increase visibility to all users. Otherwise a lot of editors wouldn't notice that times symbol isn't an "x", or and en and em dashes aren't simply a "-". (I discovered those characters thanks to the entity references.) seeking help in making addition to infobox television template

Spain-film-stub

Hi - I see you have created a new stub type, Spain-film-stub. As it clearly explains at WP:STUB, and at the top of most stub categories - including the one you created! - all new stub types should be proposed prior to creation at WP:WSS/P, so that they can be checked for viability, and to make sure they don't go against either the stub category hierarchy or stub naming conventions. In the case of your new stub type, it was not proposed, and it is possible that it will not reach the standard threshol;d of 60 current stubs for it to be considered viable. The stub type has been listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Discoveries - please make any comments as to the reasons for and possible population of this new stub type. Be warned that it may be nominated for deletion via WP:SFD if it is deemed not to conform to normal stub type criteria. Please, in future, if you wish to create a new stub type, propose it first! The unacknowledged policy you created: Wikipedia:WikiProject Usability/Clickable images is not associated with the WikiProject Usability for there are no references to it or links on the mainpage. It appears you created it as a subpage and are the sole contributor and enforcer of that policy. The changes you have made to the portals directly conflicts with the usage policy for Template:Click and I urge you to revert your edits. Mkdwtalk 04:21, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Hello Mkdw, thank you for being interested in this accessibility effort. I don't know whether this can be considered an "official" project of the Usability WikiProject, but I have contributed to other projects under the umbrella of this one also without any links from the main page of the wikiproject, like Wikipedia:WikiProject Usability/Infobox accessibility. But I can say this is an official accessibility project. And yes, sadly very few people are currently active contributors of these projects (note that in the "infobox accessibility" project we were only 3). However, I wouldn't say I'm the only contributor / enforcer of this project: this issue was discussed in a vote for deletion of template:click, but it wasn't deleted because template:click was used in thousand of pages. This project tries to change that. The wikipedians that participated in that vote for deletion acknowledge this policy, and have helped me to fix some pages, but I agree with you I'm currently the only active contributor (but anyone can join me).
But I don't agree with you the changes I "have made to the portals directly conflicts with the usage policy for Template:Click", quite the reverse: Template:Click clearly say this template shouldn't be used "unless absolutely necessary," and I think those pages weren't following that policy. Thanks for removing Template:Clickable

I noticed that you removed Template:Click from template:Sri Lankan Conflict, thanks for removing it I never knew Template:click has so many technical issues. Please stop

Please stop removing {{click}} from portal pages without discussion. I'm aware of problems with {{click}} and think you have good intentions. But, alternatives to {{click}}, such as the ImageMap extension, are now available. Instead of removing {{click}}, you (or whoever is removing {{click}}) must set up this alternative so that the intended functionality is retained. Mass removal of {[tl|click}} without taking the time to do it properly is not okay. --Aude (talk) 14:22, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

Taiwanese aborigines

I'm curious, what part of the "Accessibility" link you put in the edit summary lets you move the infobox to a lower section? I saw nothing of the kind.... Ling.Nut 23:03, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Well, I usually move the navigation boxes below the lead section for the same reason as the TOC must not be placed above this first paragraph of the article (but you are right, this is not explicitly stated in the policy). The reason is simple: wikipedians using some user agents like screen readers will have some navigation problems and they expect to hear first the lead paragraph with a short definition or an infobox with a summary with useful data, and not a bunch of links (TOC or a navigation box).
But in the article about Taiwanese aborigines the situation is more complicated than I initially though... I thought I was moving a navigation box and not an infobox, but now I'm not sure. It has a mixed structure: a summary of data like an infobox, but a set of links like a navigation box. But it has no parameters, and therefore all the articles using this sidebar share exactly the same data. So I think the article will be more accessible if this template is considered as a navigation box, and thus it should be placed below the lead section. Technical University of Madrid (UPM)

I work for this University, and our naming policy clearly states that the English name is "Technical University of Madrid". AFAIK, this is because a politechnic is a specific term in English, but my university can't be categorized that way. I can't find an on-line version of this policy, but I do have internal e-mail describing this policy. The link I provided are from a department of the UPM, but I can also post some links of the rectorate [5] [6]. I afraid your sources aren't very good. Thanks for uploading Image:UPM.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Please be aware that all the articles about the metric system, including International System of Units, are frequently vandalized. Some of the vandalism is especially insidious and subtle. I just looked at the edit again, and I now see that "Wikipedia:Accessibility#Data tables" is intended as an explaination of the edit. When I first saw it, I thought it was something created by the software that shows differences between the current version and the older version.
