Categories[edit]

Do we necessarily want this in Category:New York City Subway? It hasn't been around since 1923, which is why it's in Category:New York City Subway history; that seems like enough. --SPUI (talk) 23:51, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I see your point. What I'm looking for is a way to categorize things directly related to the system that bear on the system but may not be current. The problem is that "New York City Subway" has become a generic term independent of the companies and the physical rights-of-way, just as "elevated" was a generic term in the past. All the former elevated lines also tend to be in the category.
A better overall category might be "New York City rapid transit" but I suppose people would look first under "...subway" which kinds of bugs me, because "subway" doesn't adequately describe the system as a generic category.
This same dichotomy of genericness or not of the term "subway" played out in the recent celebrations: "New York City 1904-2004 Subway Centennial" as it says on the MTA website, but they really mean "IRT Subway Centennial" since there are a number of "subway" lines still running that predate the IRT by decades. -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 02:11, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)
I think we've established that we're calling the current system the New York City Subway. Thus, anything relating to its history would be New York City Subway history, including early elevated lines, and maybe streetcar lines. --SPUI (talk) 05:40, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I have merged in a section of pre-history from Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation that relates to this period with [this edit and have removed it from the other article with this one. I can't vouch for the content as it has no references and I have no knowledge of the line. Please can someone who knows the subject check it. Thanks.
