Merge[edit]

I disagree that this should be merged. That would be POV, as the term "Miracle on Ice" refers only to the American victory, not to the entire ice hockey competition. Plus, the Olympic ice hockey articles (should) have a consistent format, listing winners, scores, etc. and a brief summary of any important events. – flamurai (t) 20:16, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC)

In my opinion, a good example of information about Winter Olympics Ice Hockey Tournament is: Ice hockey at the 2002 Winter Olympics. A good example of a brief summary of WOIHT is Ice hockey at the 1994 Winter Olympics. Information in this article covers only two teams performance:USSR team and USA team, besides this, it hasn't any results and is an exact subset of information, presented in the Miracle on Ice. That's why I think, that it is the worst example of an article about WOIHT. Let's keep going in this direction. Cmapm 14:46, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Haven't, better indeed. But it's not the point. The point is that while good examples like Ice hockey at the 1988 Winter Olympics, Ice hockey at the 2002 Winter Olympics and Ice hockey at the 1994 Winter Olympics (the latter is with a good brief summary) exist, articles like this one go in a different (and wrong IMHO) way. Medallists[edit]

I understand, that Finland played the last game against the gold medallist and because of this some people think that Finland is the silver medallist. But facts are facts. USA got gold, USSR got silver, Sweden got bronze, Finland was fourth.

The point is that the competition system in the medal round was round-robin, not play-offs. USA won 4-3 over USSR, tied 2-2 with Sweden and won 4-2 over Finland. USSR lost 3-4 to USA, won 9-2 over Sweden and won 4-2 over Finland. Sweden tied 3-3 with Finland, lost 2-9 to the USSR and tied 2-2 with the USA. Finland's "perfect" scores you can see above. Final standings:

  1. USA 5pts
  2. USSR 4pts
  3. Sweden 2pts
  4. Finland 1pt

    • Sorry, first I thought it was your personal mistake, but it turned out, that you were mistaken by that article (I've just corrected it).         • All right, I pasted the results and notes on the competition system. I used Ice hockey at the 1988 Winter Olympics as a template. By the way, the competition system there is nearly the same, the only difference is that into the medal round advance top three (not top tweo) teams from each group. When I collect dates, known to myself I'll add them in the format, used in that article. I suggest you to rely on that format too, when you'll add dates known to you. We could glimpse all the required info in the Official Report submitted by the US Organizing Committee to the IOC after the Games, it is supposed to appear on this page [4] by the end of this year. Source for leading scorers[edit]

I looked up info about leading scorers in [5]. At least data for top 5 scorers is the same, as in the book, which I have. Pretty surprising scores of three Czechoslovakian players on top, while Czechoslovakia even didn't advance to the medal round! Cmapm 13:31, 22 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Further surprising is that the USSR won 2 games with 16 and 17 goals respectively, and still managed to not have the leading scorer. Wierd.
