possible vandal added "nope" to the end of "Property values and household income has been declining in recent decades." Vandal may have disagreed but provided no information whatsoever to support it. If there are statistics, the source of the information would be useful, whether declining or increasing. (aside - I missed the subject verb disagreement, fixing now). Fair use rationale for Image:Westville logo.gif[edit]

Image:Westville logo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Alvah Mayo[edit]

There seems to be some issues regarding the number of times Alvah Mayo has been the NS Chess Champion. According to the reference provided, this title is awarded to the winner of the NS Closed Championship, and Alvah Mayo appears only twice in this list. Admittedly the list is incomplete, but we cannot second guess what is not there. I have therefore changed the claim to 'two time champion'.

There are several routes forward. If he did win the Closed Championship 7 times, then a reference must be provided that verifies this. If however the claim is that he has won seven differing titles, then the wording of the text needs to be changed accordingly.

I also have to question the notability of this item. I would have expected Google to find more information for someone truly notable, especially in the press. Maybe some chess enthusiast has access to something in print? Derek Andrews (talk) 11:52, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alvah Mayo[edit]

I am uncertain as to why the number of titles is persistently being altered by a CFA based solely on a reference which itself states it is incomplete and has not been updated since 2006. I believe I am in a good position to know how many times Alvah Mayo has won a Nova Scotia championship title. That term is appropriately used regardless of whether the tournament is a closed format (by invitation only) or open format (open to all players).

It is unclear who provided the reference cited in the article but a cursory Google search reveals the following newspaper article http://www.ngnews.ca/index.cfm?sid=45228&sc=49 which chronicles the most recent Nova Scotia Closed championship win in 2007 not included in the aforementioned reference.

One can also utilize the Chess Federation of Canada's events crosstable list which contains a searchable database of every CFC event since early 1996. The results for Alvah Mayo found at http://www.chess.ca/memberinfoSQL.asp?CFCN=105142 include an archive which documents six of the seven victories in question. The seventh victory in 1994 predates the 1996 start year for the archive but can also be found in the August 1994 edition of Canada's national chess magazine En Passant.
