Category talk:United States political parties[edit]

  • The following was copied from the talk page of the former name of this category.

Perhaps there should be some sub-categories, arranged similar to this list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_political_parties_in_the_United_States

Category:Major_United_States_political_parties Category:Third_United_States_political_parties Category:Minor_United_States_political_parties

all sub-categories of this category.

The names aren't good, but something along those lines...

I personally disagree. It may be obvious, in the U.S., that all parties other than Dem & Rep are minor, but in other countries the distinction isn't clear at all. I wouldn't want to set the precedent, as it would be an arbitrary political judgement in many cases. Besides, there are only a dozen or two parties anyway. Quadell (talk) 20:29, Jun 10, 2004 (UTC)

What about former parties, like the United States Whig Party? Same list, or a different one? --Delirium 20:42, Jun 12, 2004 (UTC)

In my view, former parties ought to be included here as well. Quadell (talk) 15:41, Jun 14, 2004 (UTC)

The subcategories are confusing - Why can't we just have all political parties listed here? The Democratic and Republican parties are substantial enough that I think they can stand being listed with other parties, and it's not as though there's such an inordinate number of them. john k 02:27, 22 Jun 2004 (UTC)

ideological subcats[edit]

All top-level party cats have now been moved to a subcat of Category:Political parties in the United States by ideology that describes them, except the Democratic Party, which I'm not quite sure how to describe. I don't think "socialist" is accurate though it has leanings that way compared to "conservative" parties. Anyway, moving individual party articles (those without categories) to this hierarchy would be great. For anyone curious, this effort was initiated by a CfD. ⇔ ChristTrekker 19:36, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
