Not that it matters, but I don't think anybody who studies Talmud would deny that Ben Yehoyada is basically where you look after the Maharsha to figure out an Aggadata, but...no matter. User:PhatJew

Not necessarily true. Depending on the topic discussed in the talmud, one might look at at the ben yehoyada before the maharsha. Pretty much any of the mystical passages are in depth explained by the ben ish chai. Also passages concerning judgment and the world to come would be more practical in the ben yehoyada.--Power2People (talk) 05:20, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but it is a matter of opinion. Some may prefer the Maharal. JFW | T@lk 02:34, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Can we establish his true date of birth? The article, and half the links, say 1832. The article on Iraqi Jews, and the other half of the links, say 1834. Which is right? --Sir Myles na Gopaleen (the da) 12:43, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another question. The article, and most of the links, say that he became "the Rabbi of Baghdad" at the age of 25 on the death of his father. However, the introduction to the English translation of "Ben Ish Hai" says that he declined the post of Hakham Bashi and refused all payment for his services, accepting only the post of darshan (preacher). Again, which is right? --Sir Myles na Gopaleen (the da) 11:02, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the confusion has to do with the Orthodox focus on the Mishnah that says one should "hate Rabbinical positions." While there are Rabbinical posts, the people who most often end up actually occupying the greatest ones are not appointed as much as fall into the position. What probably happened is that he was offered the position, refused it and all the other Rabbis followed his opinions anyways. I have seen many similar things happen in modern days, it is the way much of Orthodoxy works. 71.156.41.233 (talk) 06:11, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In other words, it is as I thought: the concept of "the Rabbi of Baghdad" is nonsense, and he was simply recognised as the leading poseq. I have amended the article accordingly. --Sir Myles na Gopaleen (the da) (talk) 09:41, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Standard name in academic sources[edit]

Although it is common colloquially to refer to certain authorities by their books, for bio articles we should follow Wikipedia:naming conventions, and use the author's name. Hence page moved to bio name. In ictu oculi (talk) 02:35, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The name is a common Jewish one, and there are probably thousands of people past and present with this name. Please consider adding some disambiguation appendix to the name, such as "Yosef Hayyim of Baghdad." --Nostro Fidelis (talk) 13:19, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
