I think it might be more useful to move this to "2004 in Japan," following the model of e.g. 2004 in India. We could then create back-year articles for Japanese history as well. - Sekicho 21:53, Oct 31, 2004 (UTC)

Merge proposal[edit]

I don't think this page should be merged with the Heisei article. However, I think it's good source material for Heisei. News can include things like a Prime Minister's visits to the Yasukuni Shrine or a party representative's trip to North Korea. They happen routinely and individual occasions may better be forgotten. The average national election probably does not belong in Heisei, but an election that's surprising or signals a change in direction deserves mention in Heisei, a paragraph or two in News, and full detail in a comprehensive article. The Kobe earthquake belongs in Heisei (and News); routine earthquakes that shake stuff off the shelves of the 7-Eleven belong in News (not in Heisei). The lost decade has to be mentioned in Heisei; a month of straight gains or losses on the market would be for News.

Another possibility is to create an article like "Heisei events," and periodically (e.g. at the end of each year) merge this article into it.
