Big 4 Pageant Irrelevant[edit]

Hi Wikipedians,

I would like to raise a topic on the concept of Big 4 pageants mentioned in this article.

As a pageant follower, I recognized that the concept Big 4 was widely mentioned by Wikipedia. However, this term may not reflect the current situation in pageantry.

In this article, I found 2 external links leading to 2 articles which claim Miss World, Universe, International and Earth are the big 4 pageants.

One of the link cannot be accessed. The other is in Kenyan press called Standard Media, which barely mentioned the Big 4 pageant without explaining why these pageants are big. I think that this source is not credible enough.

In terms of estimating the significance of beauty pageants, I believe websites such as Global Beauties and Missosology are more credible than just random articles of different online news, which were often written by non-pageant followers.

Both of these websites I noted do not have 4, but instead 5 big pageants. They all agree that Miss World, Universe, International, Supranational are big. There are some disputes over Miss Earth and Miss Grand International though. Please view these links below:

  • missosology.org/big5/analysis/26145-miss-supranational-is-now-a-major-international-beauty-pageant/

Therefore, I suggest we Wikipedians who write pageant-related articles should reconsider the concept Big 4 here. I suggest we will mention that there is a "Big 5" according to different reliable sources from these 2 pageant websites.

Thank you all for reading my long post. I hope to contribute more.

Based on wikipedia log history, Miss Supranational was nominated and deleted 5 times including Mister Supranational. Miss Supranational is not notable based on the consensus of Wikipedia editors and deleted by wikipedia administrators since no in-depth coverage of the pageant from reputable news agencies (unlike historical pageants such as Miss Universe, Miss World). User-generated websites such as Global Beauties and Misology are not considered reliable sources based on wikipedia policy. If you think that pageants like Miss Grand International, Miss Global, Miss Arab World or Miss Asia Pacific World must be deleted because they did not meet wikipedia's notability, you can nominate these articles for deletion and editors will decide their notability.--Richie Campbell (talk) 04:05, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Additional Section about Beauty Pageants[edit]

I am planning on adding in a separate section about how beauty pageants can increase competitors' skills, leading to greater advancements in future professions (i.e. political offices). There are a number of peer-reviewed academic articles on this topic that I will be citing. To allude to this new section and to describe additional benefits of beauty pageants, I have added the following sentence to the beginning of the page.

Additionally, these events strengthen skills, such as interpersonal communications, self-assurance, and public speaking, which provide to be useful in future career paths.[1]

@Thomas.W: removed the sentence and labeled it as "unencyclopaedic hogwash." However, the sentence is cited to a credible academic article and provides insight on a topic that the article has been missing. I appreciate your comment but I am not sure how this sentence does not follow Wikipedia policy. Could you provide some more information on what needs to be fixed about the sentence?

I saw that revert and I disagree that it's hogwash. I think such a section could be added but beware of using too many primary sources. Kendall-K1 (talk) 21:48, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You need much better sources than what you provided for a claim like that, and preferably multiple sources (see WP:RS; your source seems to be just an opinion piece, based on the abstract, I haven't read the full text, though, and have no intention of paying $42.50 to do so...), you would also need to rephrase it, and not present it as an absolute fact, as you did. - Tom | Thomas.W talk 09:35, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that my statement could be rephrased as shown below. This way it would not be portrayed as an absolute fact.
Researchers suggest that these events strengthen skills, such as interpersonal communications, self-assurance, and public speaking, which provide to be useful in future career paths.
As for the statements you made about the source, the article is not an opinion piece and is written by two Political Science PhD's. They use a number of case studies to reinforce their points about how beauty pageants can strengthen skills that can help competitors advance in future career endeavors. @Thomas.W: Does this address the concerns you had with my proposed addition to the article? Admiralan (talk) 17:44, 28 September 2018 (UTC)Admiralan[reply]
I know I defended this as not hogwash, but I'm leaning toward leaving this out unless we can find a secondary source. Kendall-K1 (talk) 14:25, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The article that I used is a secondary source. It analyzes case studies and the works of other researchers and authors. Admiralan (talk) 17:39, 29 September 2018 (UTC)Admiralan[reply]
If there are no other concerns, I would like to implement the adjusted sentence into the article. Admiralan (talk) 17:34, 1 October 2018 (UTC)Admiralan[reply]

New Section of Diversity in Beauty Pageants[edit]

At the current moment, the Beauty Pageant seems to lack a section on the diversity that exists in types of beauty pageants across the world. I am currently developing this part of the article and will keep updates in this section of the talk page. Admiralan (talk) 12:13, 11 October 2018 (UTC)Admiralan[reply]

I have posted the section on diversity. The sources used are typically secondary sources, and many of the article authors draw from other academic journals to form their points. I have included an annotated bibliography on my Talk Page: User:Admiralan/sandbox
As for the content of the new section, I have described some of the variations of diversity in beauty pageants. Additionally, I have started to describe why beauty pageants may have spread to countries outside of the United States and the United Kingdom. Admiralan (talk) 13:45, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for doing this work. Kendall-K1 (talk) 15:25, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
