Shostakovich Preludes

I'm taking the extreme liberty of a very belated welcome to the 'pedia to you, Solipsist. I have a question since you appear to be well-informed about Shostakovitch. Are the 24 preludes op.34 worth investigating, or are the 24 Preludes AND fugues op.87 musically superior? I am always interested in new wiki's especially if from East Anglia and with interests in Classical music. Hope you enjoy your stay at the Wiki and look forward to future contributions from you. Hi Norwikian,

To be honest I am not as familiar with the Op34 preludes. They are certainly interesting pieces, being written in DSCH's more private reflective period after being critised from Lady Macbeth. You can also play 'spot the themes' from his other pieces - having just listened to them again, I'm trying to place the theme from the first prelude, which may get reused in the slow section of the Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Orchestra . On the whole I don't find them as compelling as the Op87 set (but then I really like the fugues).

If you don't know them, the string quartets are certainly worth investigating. -- Solipsist 16:34, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Francis Bacon

Odd that you added a picture of Bacon's statue in Cambridge a few days ago. I just independently added an almost identical statue in St Albans: apparently the Cambridge statue is a copy. Ghouston 16:06, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Old-fashioned prose on George Fox

Hello, Solipsist. Thanks for your comments on WP:FAC. I've been trying to improve the article, but I'm having trouble with the old-fashioned prose. This is unfortunately what my writing style is like, and I'm finding it difficult to see which bits are obscure. I've just taken out "brooded particularly"; are there any more phrases that jump out? Technically they were not for Remembrance Day, being on a memorial for firemen — especially those who died in the Blitz fighting the fires around St Paul's Cathedral. However, they is still for Rememberance, although I'm guessing the fireman have a ceremony on a different day (possibly the 18–19 September) as the wreaths were very fresh.

I've been checking "as of" links from older years and tidying up or removing any that need it (most, I find, go to population figures for geographic articles). I am in Chicago right now, returning from having a hernia operation in Toronto. As an American without health coverage it is less expensive [like half] for me to drive 2,000 miles and have it done in canada than to do it in America. • Well I am back home in NM and have just spent a pleasant bit of time rooting through my sculpture library and putting together some references for your sculpture technique article. it turned out that I had quite a few. Anyway, I'll try for some terms later. "Lost Wax Casting", for example. I also ran across something in your "discussions" from some poor fellow who had tried to do the right thing with Lee Lawrie and was worried about how I'd feel, waking up in America the next day. the only trouble i have waking up in America involves having a war criminal as the Head of State. • Hi Carprtrash, glad you are back - hope the op went well. There is already a fairly good description of Lost Wax Casting at Casting along with a rather good photo, but it isn't organised that well and I'm sure there is more to say.

I started Glossary of sculpting terms in order to clear up some of the red links on my Henry Moore article which recently got through WP:FAC (with luck my photo will pass also on WP:FPC this week too). Arguably the Glossary should be broken up into individual articles as the sections are expanded (or kept as a summary with links to the full articles), but some of the items like maquette are bordering on dictionary definitions and might not expand much further. It might need some more thought to sort out the best organisation. It is also as well to be aware of Wikipedia:Sculpture basic topics, which is part of the list of basic topics which every wiki-language-encyclopedia should have, yet still has a fair few red link in English.

I reckon your Lee Lawrie article should be a good topic for a featured article eventually (the connection to the Rockefeller Center alone makes him interesting), but it needs to grow a little first in order to balance the text to photo ratio. From what I've seen, Featured Articles and Featured Pictures can be a bit of a bear pit. Never-the-less it was quite nice to see the article grow from the additional attention. Peer Review is gentler, but is often so sleepy that it isn't obvious anything is going on. -- Solipsist 22:07, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)

• Yes, thank-you, I'm in good shape - at lest good enough to be doing this at 2:00 AM. Don't be surprised to see scar pictures showing up in the "hernia" entry soon. I started adding images to my Hugh Ferriss abd discoverd that I'd spelled his name wrong. Whooops - but i figured out the MOVE thing, so all is well. I'm rooting around to get some pictures for a Henry Moore in America - two or three anyway, unless you think I should wait a bit. I'll cast about in your glossery and see if "lost wax casting" should be an entry of its own or not. I just did a very quick look-see last time and decided to work on the references first. • Off the top of my head I have a Moore picture of an arch in Richmond Indiana that looks very much like the one in Japan. I am rather looking forward to comparing them, and the dates involved. Then I have Princeton NJ, and Milwaukee WI, and I've seen others, but might not have photographed them. I wsa never a BIG Moore fan, being moore of a figurative sort. Much prefer Eric Gill, for example.

I'm thinking about those direct carvers you are looking for and am doing an description of pointing, since that was one of your red marks in the Moore piece. a can o' worms

Well you have done it now with your seemingly innocent query about the Aumonier's. As far as i can tell from the perhaps half dozen, or just more, references that I can find of them in my less-than-spectacular British Sculpture & Architecture collection, there were three generations of William Aumonier sculptors. As bad as the Alexander Calders. The second or third generation could easily have been an Eric, as the Calders had Sterling and Sandy. Did I mention that my lovely wife has the mumps. Second case the doctor has seen in a week after averaging one a year. She is contagious, but NOT over the WWW. HAs led to a change of the orders-o- the-day around here. Hi. I just downloaded the large image and made it a bit smaller. original size was 1MB, now its about 280kB. I did not touch the color controls at all. I don't know. To be honest, I'm not that much of a group hug sort of person. Wikipedia:wikiAloha sort of fits the Wikwiki theme and stops it being too serious, although everyone is likely to think it is a place for welcoming newcomers. Is there a Hawaiian word for hug? There is also the problem of how to handle someone seeking a group hug and getting no replies. Probably a theme to be explored on Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals).

Architecture of London Ontario [NOT England}

Thanks for the idea. i think that I'll just toss the pictures onto the London Ontario page and see what develops. i can probably start captions that will just be style based - deco, neo-classic, and that sort of thing. I have not forgotten sculpture terms either, just been waylaid. Meanwhile, it has been widely understood in many circles in the US of A that Geo Bush [the Pretender] would come up with some last minute scare tactic. it is quite illuminating that it is Osama BL who actually delivered it, right on cue.

I nearly added a comment that you might only get results if you had photos from the real London, but since Adam Bishop is Canadian I didn't want to risk offence.

I'm afraid I can't help you with the election thing. You'll just have to trust that it will be alright on the night. And if it is not, at least he can't get in for a third term, so you only have another four or five years to wait.
