Tingalpa Olympic Bid[edit]

Hi there. I am confused to why information on the Tingalpa Olympic Bid keeps being reverted. One editor calls it a 'frivolous' joke, despite the fact that credible references exist as to its truth value. Whether one might think the bid is a frivolous joke, or not, is irrelevant. it's not at all credible, this is an encyclopaedia, the ABC story was a light hearted one. I bet you can't find significant coverage from various sources. two ref you cite is a blog or self published which is unacceptable as per WP:SPS. Really this comes under WP:HOAX. Those are fair enough points. As an infrequent editor of wikipedia, I am unaware of the exact rules regarding citing of reputable sources. I would have thought that the ABC was reputable enough, blog or otherwise, but yes, the rules are clear. However, in your view, what further references would be required to prove it as a 'fact', at least in terms of wikipedia? Comments on neutrality/information value of article[edit]

This article's information value appears minimal, at best, and does not reflect general demographics or characteristics of the suburb. At least with some context or further information, the current content could be better understood. The assertions made have not been appropriately referenced. Origins of name 'Tingalpa'[edit]

When I went to Tingalpa State School in the 1970s, the teachers told us 'Tingalpa' is an aboriginal word meaning 'place of the fat kangaroo'. I cannot verify this elsewhere, however. badings 6:27PM 12 July 2015 — Preceding undated comment added 08:27, 12 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The meaning of a lot of indigenous names (or at least indigenous-sounding names) is often a bit of a mystery. Often the name has been corrupted when written down by Europeans in the first place. Secondly, there are often different Aboriginal tribes that may have been in the area with different dialects. Finally, early Europeans didn't realise that there wasn't a single Aboriginal language so they often learned some words in one place and then moved to another place and used them there for a name, which had no meaning to the local people, etc. So, really, there is no way of knowing for sure what is right and is wrong. The best thing we can do is put down the possibilities with whatever sources support each possibility.Kerry (talk) 12:37, 15 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
