Untitled[edit]

This article was a mess. There were multiple history sections, and a partial sentence seemed to be part of a failed copy/edit from some other source. So I rewrote it from scratch. Jeff Knaggs 12:36, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Good job - but why didn't you mention the fact that Stevenage is also the unofficial Mecca for Burberry clad, hooded chavs? Thats a major reason why I left.

Are you implying there's an official Mecca for Burberry clad, hooded chavs? Sweetie Petie 19:37, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There are four uses of 'probably' in the History section. Seems a little excessive to me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.149.222.200 (talk) 12:30, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have flagged this article as needing attention as the formatting looks all really broken to me and I'm really sorry but I don't have time to clean it up or restore it - Jen 13.28 25th November 2013 —Preceding undated comment added 13:28, 26 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The infobox was broken by the person who edited it before you added the tag. It just needed to be "undone". –anemoneprojectors– 10:51, 27 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Chavs[edit]

Indeed I am sir!

Stevenage is the only place I know where they have an ambulance and police response unit set up in the leisure park on friday and saturday night. As they are called so frequently, it was a worthwhile and cost effective step. I kid you not!! (even saw it on ITV)

Additionally, walking in the town centre, one in every three girls 14-16 seem to have a baby. Must have been the inspiration for Viz's "Kappa Slappa".

(P.s as you may have figured out, the previous comment about the chavs was mine, I'm new to this and didn't know how to add a comment and accidently edited one! Sorry)

So, you think that this is unusual in England then? Now been about much then. It's pretty much the same situation in dozens of towns in this country. Could be worse, could be married to a blood relative like Hitchin folk. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.18.73.199 (talk) 20:28, 8 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

And I think Stevenage is just lovely, and not really that chavvy. Or have I just lived here too long? Sweetie Petie 23:49, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've lived here all my life and I think its extremely chavvy. 86.143.30.34 14:46, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's cos you're a chav :P -- AnemoneProjectors (talk) 20:17, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone please include a part about Stevenage having the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe?

Provide a source for it and we will. AnemoneProjectors (talk) 14:58, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A bit out of date, but here you go: http://www.eukn.org/E_library/Housing/Housing_Policy/Housing_Need/UK%E2%80%99s_first_new_town_Stevenage — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.231.128.177 (talk) 01:16, 8 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Transport[edit]

I think there ought to be a transport section. I know there's a railway station, and presumably there are buses, taxis, cycle lanes etc. as well. Does anybody know enough to add to the article? A bit iffy 13:04, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think the cycle lanes should definintely be mentioned. National Cycle Network route 12 passes through Stevenage. — AnemoneProjectors (talk) 14:28, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Right we have got a Buss Service which is opperated by arriva and cycle ways as mentioned above Center buss and the uno buss company run on the subject of taxis we have got Ace taxis who run from the glebe and a few other srvices who names i can not think off at the moment —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jason Rees (talkcontribs) 21:21, 22 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]
Have split transport. Your turn to add extra bits SimonTrew (talk) 23:28, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sport Stevenage[edit]

Hi,

Can we mention something here about sport in Stevenage?

Sport Stevenage is the sports council for the town; it is Sport England at the local level. We have a new Web site: sportstevenage.co.uk which features a "club finder" where you may search for local sports clubs. You may also find sport news articles of local interest and information about upcoming sport events.

Regards, Chris

Correcting some latin[edit]

"six tumuli" should actually read "sex tumuli"

"Six tumuli" is English, not Latin. — AnemoneProjectors (zomg!) 13:18, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Arms-stevenage.jpg[edit]

Image:Arms-stevenage.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 19:28, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Population[edit]

According to Herts county council, the population for Stevenage town was 80,873[1]. Therefore, how comes the estimation for 2005 is less?

Famous People[edit]

Alan Munro the Jockey comes from Stevenage and should be added. Also Graham Poll, the ref who gave out three yellow cards to one player in a World Cup match, grew up in Bandley Hill, Stevenage.Jim Eblett (talk) 20:31, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You should also add Isobel Varley - the most tattooed senior woman in the world.... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.47.19.249 (talk) 16:55, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Any proposed new additions need to have a good reference for their Stevenage connection. David Underdown (talk) 13:59, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, they should have a reference but also in most cases a Wikipedia article. Those three do, but Alan Munro (jockey), Isobel Varley and Graham Poll do not mention Stevenage. AnemoneProjectors (talk) 16:01, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I just found this article on Varley, but I don't really have time to add it and look for sources for the others. AnemoneProjectors (talk) 16:03, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously nothing more than rumour, but I've heard it said for years that Lacey Turner lives in Stevenage, and even before that rumours that her parents come from Stevenage. I was always unsure about it, thinking that somebody would've seen her about by now, but they still persist years later. Anyone got any sources on this? Perry (talk) 02:18, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

She lives in Radlett with her parents.[1] AnemoneProjectors (talk) 02:40, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Aside from the fact that Alan Munro grew up round the corner from me (!), see a reference here to his going to school in Stevenage: <url>http://www.famousracehorses.co.uk/SC/ALAN-MUNRO.html</url> (about half way down the page).

Graham Poll went to Alleynes School in Stevenage, as referenced here: <url>http://www.grahampoll.co.uk/pages/career.html</url>. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jim Eblett (talkcontribs) 14:20, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Surely the maker and rider of of "Super Nero", George Brown, merits inclusion? He did break several land speed world records and his record-breaking motorcycle "Super Nero" stood on display in his Vincent shop window in the High Street for many years.--Tarquin Q. Zanzibar (talk) 18:46, 24 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

George Brown used to have a Wikipedia article but it was deleted in 2014 due to copyright infringement. However, a new article could be created. He is currently listed at the disambiguation page George Brown as a red link. I have no problem with him being added to the list here. — ᴀnemoneᴘroᴊecтors 14:54, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Places of worship"[edit]

I'm challenging the need for this section, as it seems to be a christian-centric section, otherwise useless. I'll come back in a week's time and remove it unless a very strong case is made for its inclusion. —ᚹᚩᛞᛖᚾᚻᛖᛚᛗ (ᚷᛖᛋᛈᚱᛖᚳ) 05:41, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It seems fairly standard to indlue similar sections, and churhces do usually have a fairly wide social mipact. There may be ommissions, but better to add equivalents for other religions, rather than delete existing information. Churches are often very significant historically and architecturally, and Anglican parish churches still have important legal functions as the established church. The list is not well presented, but there are clearly some unusual things there, a number of joint churches (probably a function of the New Town development), and a Coptic church suggests an active Egyptian community in the town, which probably ought ot be expanded on elsewhere in the article. Also note that WP:UKTOWNS#Religious sites recommends the inclusion of places of worship, so do not remove without consensus (preferably involving WP:UKGEO please. New guardian article[edit]

New guardian article- any use to anyone?

Great North Road?[edit]

The settlement had moved down to the Great North Road and in 1281 it was granted a Royal Charter.

Are you sure there was a Great North Road in Norman times? Is it the same one we call the Great North Road (A1)? Valetude (talk) 11:37, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Great North Road (Great Britain). From the south, it passed the Six Hills, through what is now Stevenage town centre and onto the current High Street. — anemoneprojectors 12:24, 23 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Public Transport in Stevenahe[edit]

I'd like to completely rework and revamp the Buses section of Stevenage's Public Transport. The New Stevenage interchange opened last year, many services have swapped operators and this section of the article overall doesn't seem very fleshed out.
