How to avoid cramps while swimming[edit]

This is advice (and unreliable advice at that), not an encyclopedia article. Actually, the whole series of How-to articles are problematic, and need to be removed (the useful ones transwikied and the rest deleted). --L33tminion | (talk) 19:49, Dec 3, 2004 (UTC)

  • Delete: The article tells what to do after you get cramps, not how to avoid them. Everyone knows that to avoid cramps you have to wait 30 minutes after eating. DCEdwards1966 21:53, Dec 3, 2004 (UTC)
Actually, I read something within the last few years that says there's no truth whatsoever to the "wait thirty minutes" dictum. It's just another piece of advice with no known origin or supporting evidence (like the "fact" that you need to drink eight glasses of water a day). I was just kidding about the "wait 30 minutes" thing. However, the article doesn't address avoiding cramps, it talks about dealing with them after the fact. DCEdwards1966 06:10, Dec 4, 2004 (UTC)
  • Weak keep. After writing the above I actually looked at the article and noticed that it has a fine pair of links to flatly contradictory pieces of information. It's worth keeping for that alone. As always, the Snopes article is detailed and convincing. Amazing that she thinks she's achieved something by showing that the belief goes back to 1968... I can personally vouch for it going back to the 1950s if not earlier. In fact, perhaps the most interesting thing about the old article is that it quotes "A Boy's Own Book of Outdoor Sports" to the effect of its being connected to "indigestion." The article should be moved to something like Leg cramps while swimming and comparatively discuss the various factoids, beliefs, and viewpoints.
