It is good to note that the primary fortress of Melkor, Utumno, during the Wars of the Powers was not an above ground lair as Angband would later be, but a subterraean pit delved with small maggot holes and fiery gorges. It was created by Melkor before the flight of the Valar to Valinor while they still lived in Araman; Melkor built it in hopes of seeking out unaided territory for him to ensnare. At the coming of the Elves to Middle-earth, the newly awoken Quendi noticed, far off, the great war of the powers going on at Utumno's gates. Therein Melkor fell and was brought bound to Valinor, where he was to wait for three ages before he would be set free. And so Utumno was the primary northern fortress of Morgoth.
