This article looks like an advertisement for tourists. It has bunch of opinions ("pretty and characterful", "whatever turns you on!"). It also contains unencyclopedic material about car parks, restaurants and non-notable buildings (J.B.Banks and Son shop, Youth Hostel...). -Hapsiainen 23:52, Jan 14, 2005 (UTC)

I've never been there, but I've copy edited it and removed the tourist guide tips. I think it's fair enough now, so I've removed the notice. Wincoote 11:17, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Currently it still looks very biased to me. I marked this as POV because of numerous opinionated or unsubstantiated phrases in the article.
For starters:
  • "very pleasant riverside walks"
  • "one of the best in Cumbria"
  • "amongst the grandest in the North"
  • "one of the most beautiful in Britain"
  • "world famous mountaineer and TV personality"
  • "as some believe has occurred in the case of Cockermouth's neighbour"
--David Edgar 11:04, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I removed a few more opinion/hype words, but I don't think there's any reason not to believe this is a description of the town. LisaH 10 Sept 2006 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.90.184.189 (talk) 16:20, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Electric lighting[edit]

"...curiously the first in Britain to pilot electric lighting."

A claim also made by Godalming. I think that we need an article. Cutler 07:46, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Puzzled[edit]

What is a reader to make of the statement "There was a market every Monday in the town's Market Place from the 13th century, but in recent times the event is held infrequently, if at all." Is the market held infrequently, or is it not held at all? Unless time (or the English language) works differently in Cockermouth than elsewhere in the world, it must be one or the other. Whyaduck 22:59, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The market is now held infrequently, ie: when the Local Council or Chamber of Commerce decides it wants a Saturday food market (local produce), maybe once a month or less. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.66.187.85 (talk) 17:32, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Non-native[edit]

I removed the reference to Chris Bonington (one'n') being a native, he is not, he was born in Hampstead in 1934, see any of his auto-biographies and his own website. I was born and grew up there, however. :) He did mention to me once here in Sydney that his wife taught Alexander Technique in Cockermouth, however. CockermouthLass 14:38, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

William Wordsworth[edit]

Hey guys I was just reading about ol' Willy for my English test, and I discovered (to my delight, in fact) that he was born in Cockermouth, Cumbria (Hahhahahaha!) Pretty funny name, lads. Is it pronounced "Come-breea" or, well, "Cam-bria". Thanks for the help!!!

~A Student — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.62.36.143 (talk) 05:04, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The former pronounciation, which may amuse you the more.--Charles (talk) 08:25, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Protected[edit]

I've semi-protected the article indefinitely. Wikipedia is a serious encyclopedia, not the wall of a cubicle in a school toilet. Mjroots (talk) 14:45, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would agree with you, especially as a person who has seen the schools toilet walls, however I would like someone with the experience to edit the 9 Sports and Leisure section, this is because there has recently beem a vote to keep the clubs name as Keswick Hockey Club, it never was West Cumbria Hockey team. http://www.keswickhockeyclub.co.uk Thanks Joe1000000 (talk) 17:54, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Doestn't matter, I have done it. Joe1000000 (talk) 16:35, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

CCHT external link[edit]

This link was added to the article after discussion on the WP Reliable Sources Noticeboard. See: WP:RSN exercise. No information from the CCHT link has been put into the body of the article in the form of citations because it has not yet been verified for 100% accuracy by the Victoria County History project for Cumbria. (This will take some years to do). Laplacemat (talk) 18:20, 08 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Under 'Landmarks' replace 'Culturally, the Kirkgate Centre[25] offers international music, theatre and world cinema (including critically acclaimed and art-house movies on Monday evenings) etc with 'Culturally, the Kirkgate Centre[25] offers international music, heritage, theatre and world cinema (including critically acclaimed and art-house movies on Monday evenings) eetc.

Under 'Present' replace 'The Kirkgate Centre is the town's major cultural focus and offers regular historical displays by the Cockermouth Museum Group' with 'The Kirkgate Centre is the town's major cultural focus and offers regular historical displays by the Cockermouth Heritage Group' Sushla (talk) 15:33, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Both the rename of the heritage group and their importance in the kirkgate centre seem to be supported by the sources already cited, so this change make sense. Volteer1 (talk) 15:55, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
