Interwiki links[edit]

Hello, and welcome to the (English) wiki!

It's been recommended to put interwiki links at the bottom of pages, rather than the top, in hopes novice editors will be less confused. Whichever end of a page you add them to, do please put them on a separate line, rather than run into article text.

Renaming on en-wiki[edit]

Hi Céréales Killer. You recently renamed Agility Affluential to Internatagility. However, this new username still contravenes en-wiki's username policy, which prohibits Usernames that are names of posts within organizations (WP:ISU#3). "Intern at Agility" is clearly a post rather than an individual (it seems unlikely that this user was christened "Intern", unless their parents were very cruel). This has made a response to their unblock request rather difficult, since the username has been changed before being approved - really, that unblock appeal should be denied, because the name they have chosen is still unsuitable, but because you have already changed it, it appears to the user that there is no problem with their new name. Can I please ask that in future you avoid processing rename requests for such accounts when the new name has not been approved as part of an unblock? Yunshui  08:50, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I am sorry for this inconveniences. I will be more attentive in the future. I am not a number (talk) 09:10, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No worries; I suspect this is a quirk unique to en-wiki's naming policy (which is one of the most prescriptive on any Wikipedia project). I've declined the user's appeal and explained the situation to them, so no further action needed on your part. Best wishes, Yunshui  09:20, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Harassment[edit]

Hi,

I'm not harassing anyone. Please don't make such accusations because it's really unnecessary. I simply wanted to change my username again, because the previous one I did not like.

Film99 (talk) 00:20, 18 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The name renaming is not a light process. If you read the conditions for renaming, you have to think well about the nickname wanted. We will not change an account every day. I do not see big difference between Film99 and Film91. And as I said before, there is an existing account Film 9 and there is multiple possibilities of names other than Film9x... Thanks. Hi, you recently renamed Chandler Sales to ChandlerSJ. This is a courtesy note to advise that I have blocked this user. Their only edit was clearly promotional and 'ChandlerSJ' obviously refers to 'Chandler Saint John', their headquarters, and this still contravenes our username policy. Thanks for this information. I was doubting about this name change... now, it is clear :) I am not a number (talk) 07:19, 17 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

OK to link the old and new user names?[edit]

User was moved to a new name without creating a redirect: here, on June 13. That user was blocked in the past per a complaint at WP:AN3 and was also the subject of an SPI case. All the links to this person on the admin pages have turned red since this rename was done. (For example, see this search). Some of the behavior issues are mentioned here at WP:AN3. Would you object to creation of a redirect from the old user name? Thank you, EdJohnston (talk) 20:38, 25 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There is no objection. When I applied the renaming, there was no indication about previous blocking. But, this user has motivated his renaming as this: "There are some users which are "behind" me, as externally from Wikipedia, a couple of users are harassing me for my conecction with some Instagram accounts. If I remove the term "hardstyle" from my nickname, any user can know who I am. I also make editions from cities near my location and I don't want to let them know where I live. I want to change my name to "TechnicianGB" which is a generic name. I will not ask for more name changes, only this time. I really like to work on Wikipedia." For me, this user would start a new live on Wikipedia... I am not a number (talk) 06:12, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Of course @EdJohnston:, no problem! Why would I complain about it =)) I didn't ask for a new name to "clean" my status, as you know I've been blocked only one time when I've started here and only for 48 hours because I did break the 3RR in the page Valencian. That's all, you can check all my edits on Wikipedia and see my apportations to this website. Of course I don't have any problem! Kind regards --TechnicianGB (talk) 20:46, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Usernames[edit]

Hi, I've not come to lecture you but could I ask infuture that when renaming accounts you read the new name before doing it ?,
You renamed "NiagaraCollege" to User:Webmaster at Niagara College which per WP:ISU really shouldn't have been done,

Username change[edit]

Hi Céréales Killer. You recently carried out a username change for User:Maven General Motors, renaming them to WarrenTechCenter. However, this new username is also a violation of the English Wikipedia's username policy, since it represents an organisation (General Motors Technical Center). I have therefore had to decline the user's unblock appeal, which was based on this change of username. Yunshui  13:13, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I see that I've had to mention this sort of problem to you before. Please remember when renaming users on en-wiki to check that the WP:CORPNAME part of the username policy (which I don't believe is common on other Wikipedias) is adhered to. Yunshui  13:14, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And it seems I'm not the only one to have done so... Yunshui  13:16, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, looking through your talkpage history above, it seems you've opted to overlook the username policy on en-wiki on a fairly regular basis. I would strongly suggest that you leave en-wiki rename requests alone in the future; they do not appear to be a strength of yours and we do have a number of en-wiki based global renamers who can pick up the requests instead. Yunshui  13:19, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, oh.... please calm down and be friendly on your messages. I have made over than 5 500 renamings, I am Wikipedian since 2003, and sometimes one can be wrong, but if you look to all my renaming, 99.999% are correct. Your behavior is not acceptable. I wait for apologies from you. I am not a number (talk) 14:29, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you've renamed a lot of users. I'm not sure about the percentages; I haven't been through your entire history of changes. The occasional mistake is permissible, but I and several others have had to raise this with you in the past and it still appears to be an issue. Put it this way; if I were to say, "I've only mistakenly blocked ten users out of all the blocks I've ever made", that nevertheless means ten people who now can't edit Wikipedia because of my errors, and should be able to. Blocks are easy to undo (any admin has the appropriate toolset); renames are not.
I do not believe that pointing out a mistake constitutes unacceptable behaviour, and so see no need to proffer an apology for doing so. Perhaps I've been a little terse in my comments; if you've taken offence at my tone then you have my apologies for that. Yunshui  14:48, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Céréales Killer moved page User talk:Subtonemusic to User talk:Moritzvk:[edit]

I see that you made the above change. The user had been blocked because of his username - can you notify the blocking admin in such cases so that they can be unblocked if appropriate? If not, the change is of no use as the block will still be in place. I see that you have had quite a few comments about name changing - please think before doing it. Thanks. Brookie :) { - like the mist - there one moment and then gone!} (Whisper...) 15:15, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Excuse me, but what's going on with this? EEng 09:27, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

He has asked to disappear from Wikipedia: “I requested a name change earlier, but it did not work because I am blocked. Nowhere did I read that I could not be blocked. Besides, I asked an admin to block me because I wanted to leave the site. My talk page is protected due to my request, so I cannot request to be unblocked. Someone has been trying to log into my account multiple times. Could my username please be changed?” I am not a number (talk) 09:33, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Followup[edit]

Hello CK. The page move has caused the page to appear in Category:Wikipedia pages with incorrect protection templates. This always happens when a protected page is moved. All that is required to fix it is a WP:NULLEDIT. As I am not an admin I can't edit the page so - when you have a moment - if you could make the necessary edit that would be appreciated. Thanks for your time. MarnetteD|Talk 16:36, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Wait a sec. I just st realized that courtesy vanishing is for users in good standing, which to my recollection this user was not (can't check because, well, you vanished him). Is this another case where you implemented a request you shouldn't have, or is my memory faulty? EEng 13:56, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
When I rename an account, I can see if this account is blocked or not when the demand is made. If the account is blocked for any reason other than for the name, I will not rename the account and I ask the user to solve the issue first. I never renamed a blocked account. Now, if the account is blocked meanwhile, I can not guess that this account will be blocked... I am not a number (talk) 14:19, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
They requested a self-block in August 2017. >SerialNumber54129...speculates 14:54, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this case is particular, he asked to be blocked then to disappear renaming his account. There is no rule against this case? When an account is blocked for sock-puppetry, vandalism, spamming, etc., we will never rename such kind of account. Only when the account is 'soft-blocked' or others cases than this one. I am not a number (talk) 15:07, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
OK, well I see now that's technically correct. This was a very troublesome user who had just come off a one-month block, and apparently saw the wisdom of just staying away. EEng 16:40, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I understand ;) Now, if this user stays away, there is no more trouble ;) I am not a number (talk) 16:44, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

User:Xpda/q[edit]

I really hate having to come here again to complain about one of your renames, but this is another example where you have changed a promotional username to something so similar that it really doesn't constitute a name change at all. The visual similarity between the lowercase "a" and lowercase "q" makes this rename virtually pointless; it is clear that the user is still trying to use a name that relates to their website. Please review WP:CORPNAME again; paid and promotional editing is a huge problem on en-wiki and this sort of renaming does nothing to improve the situation. Yunshui  09:47, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have rolled back this renaming. I am not a number (talk) 10:00, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yet another example[edit]

I've just blocked Vinnies Australia Comms for their inappropriate username, and when I looked into their history - guess who renamed them to that?
I don't want this to look like a personal vendetta - it isn't - but I'm not aware of any other global renamer active on en-wiki who makes errors like this. Please give serious consideration to refraining from doing renames on en-wiki; it's unfair to the users being renamed, it makes more work for administrators here, and it certainly doesn't do you yourself any favours! Yunshui  14:11, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No comment. I am not a number (talk) 14:13, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Why you do not make explicite messages when an user asks for renaming? Global renamers can not know ALL THE FORBIDDEN NAMES of the world. If I have made 5 or 6 mistake against more than 6000 renaming, it is not too bad, no? Thus, please forget me and my page. I am not a number (talk) 14:15, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
No, but a native English speaker might be better able to spot inappropriate names. Your overall work in dealing with account matters is appreciated, but when it comes to renames on the English Wikipedia, it's really looking like maybe you should leave that to others. Your attitude is inconsistent with WP:ADMINACCT. EEng 16:45, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. If you are not sysop or steward, I can not give you the reason given by this user to keep his identity hidden. Sorry. I am not a number (talk) 18:36, 17 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

But is it not normal to make links to changes of nicknames? And is it allowed to have seemingly connected or linked parties working together who change names as part of their "collaboration"? who seem to have an "agenda" and delete entries for reasons more of personal belief and prejudice than objective, neutral editorial practice?Boddisatva 09:25, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Yes, it is. There is no obligation to keep a link between former an new identity whenever there is not tentative to hide any bad action (ban, block, etc.). I am not a number (talk) 10:17, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree - where a user, whose identity seems closely connected to you by the way, yet you did the edit to rename <redacted> who appears to be pursuing a personally motivated vendetta to delete biographies of people who's research or beliefs "he" disagrees with. In other words his deletion requests are driven by personal prejudice and belief. And why are you now hiding the previous name? What are you trying to hide? (Page histories in many places will show the name anyway!). There is something very fishy here.Boddisatva 11:54, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Signing errors are my fault but not intentionalBoddisatva 11:54, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) There's nothing "very strange" about it. Any user may go into their account preferences and change their signature to anything they'd like, as long as it doesn't violate any standards of good taste or general WP guidelines. For example, my signature contains slight color variations, which I could easily change, if I wished to do so. StrikerforceTalk 15:01, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question: You said one does NOT have to show a link between old and new Wiki names ... yet according to the Global Rename Policy here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_rename_policy I see that

"To be eligible for a global rename, the request must meet all of the following criteria: (inter alia)

"The old name is duly and visibly linked to the new name on any wiki where the user is active, or has a history of conflict or blocks.
The user is not seeking the rename to conceal or obfuscate bad conduct."

It seems to me that <renaming: redacted> without a referring link IS incorrect. I note this unlinked renaming happened AFTER the renamed editor triggered a controversial and heavily debated deletion of a living person biography of Malcolm KendrickBoddisatva 13:49, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

When I have made the renaming, there was no blocking on this account, no issue with this user. • Céréales Killer, it is entirely plausible that what you did was justified by privacy concerns, but on the other hand RPainter is perfectly right in pointing out that the global rename policy says that normally changed user names should be linked. You said above "If you are not sysop or steward, I can not give you the reason". I am a sysop, so are you willing to email me the reason? If there is indeed a good reason for what you did then I will tell RPainter that as an independent and uninvolved administrator I have confirmed that your deviation from normal policy was on this occasion justified, without revealing any confidential information. Cheers[edit]

Damon Runyon's short story "Dancing Dan's Christmas" is a fun read if you have the time. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry

This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.

No matter what concoction is your favorite to imbibe during this festive season I would like to toast you with it and to thank you for all your work here at the 'pedia this past year. Best wishes for your 2020 as well CK. MarnetteD|Talk 02:40, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Merry Christmas too :) I will read it asap. I am not a number (talk) 08:18, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Mea culpa[edit]

Bonjour.

I am not a number (talk) 16:13, 23 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Merci. L'idée de regarder derrière soi a fait son chemin et j'espère pouvoir déduire les conclusions que vous mentionnez, la première desquelles étant probablement d'être moins acide. Lotus 50 (talk) 17:15, 23 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ManorPrepSchool[edit]

With all respect, this username change is problematic, as it still violates WP:ISU, as an account that implies shared use. I've asked the editor to request another username change. --Hammersoft (talk) 20:26, 17 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I thought it was okay with the “Marketing” before... If this account is shared, you should block it definitively after explanations. I am not sysop on en, I cannot do it... I am not a number (talk) 20:34, 17 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I had previously blocked it, and the block went with the move. I'm leaving the block in place. Some marketing departments can have more than one person in it (some are quite huge; though I doubt this is the case with a school), so I don't feel it's appropriate. Thanks. I know it's a judgment call. --Hammersoft (talk) 20:36, 17 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Do not restore the content to the talk page again. Per WP:BLANKING, them removing the warnings is acknowledgement that they have read the warnings. There is no requirement that they remain visible. ~ GB fan 09:39, 5 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
