I just removed the speculation about what Phaser stands for. Unless there is any source for the comparison with Laser, let's take the Star Trek Encyclopedia as authoritative. DJ Clayworth

It should be noted that the "vaporization" effect of phasers isnt the same as real-life vaporization. A person can stand next to an individual who is vaporized and not be burned (the sudden flash of heat would be enough to cause burns) or harassed in any way.
