Hello Justin Foote and welcome to Wikipedia! Hope you like it here, and stick around.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Good luck!

Song titles[edit]

Heh, I wouldn't worry too much about it, I was probably being a little too quick off the draw anyway. Have you checked out Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums? It might be worth a perusal if you haven't. (That's the first time I've ever been mistaken for a software glitch!) - 18:41, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC) Lee (talk)

Lineage[edit]

Are you the chief archivist mentioned in Time Enough for Love who brought the Foundation's record to Tertius? Or perhaps his progenitor? Inquiring minds want to know ;-) --Uncle Ed 21:36, 2 Aug 2004 (UTC)

You're welcome![edit]

Glad I could help. --Ðåñηÿßôý | Talk 03:08, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

albumcover[edit]

Just a note, make sure you use albumcover instead of fairuse. The latter still works, but the first one fits better for album covers. -- -- WB 10:07, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)

Creating Articles w/ Categories[edit]

Good work creating new articles. When you create things, it helps tremendously to assign them to an accurate category (see WP:CG for info). If you're really not sure about categories, at least assign your new articles a stub category (see WP:SC for info). By assigning a category, you help make sure your new articles don't get lost as 'orphans' that are not associated with related topics. Feco

Put a few of the articles and categories you're having problems with on my Talk page. In my experience, adding Category:Finance (note the extra colon before category here... this keeps the tag from applying to THIS talk page, so the link is valid w/out dumping your talk page into the Finance category) to an article will lead to it showing up in the category within a few minutes. Adding sub-categories to other categories generally takes a little longer. One thing to be aware of... category names are very sensitive... case, spacing, etc. must exactly match the category you've created. Feco 00:01, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Copyright Policy[edit]

Good work creating new articles and contributing to exisiting ones. When you make contributions, be careful that you don't include copyrighted material. Copyright rules are complicated, so take some time to review Wikipedia:Copyrights. A good general rule is that most things on the internet are already copyrighted by someone else, so they cannot be contributed to wikipedia. Again, content from webpages is usually copyrighted and cannot be added to wiki. Keep up the good work, and feel free to contact me with questions. Feco

Downtime[edit]

Thanks for your work on Downtime (Doctor Who). I've reformatted and cleaned it up a bit to put it more in line with the style of the other articles we have. I hope you will consider joining us at Wikipedia:WikiProject Doctor Who if you haven't already, and we look forward to more contributions from you. --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 01:31, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Art copyright[edit]

I saw your question at WP:VPP and I have given a general reply there: if you want an opinion about a particular artist or work, feel free to leave a note on my talk page and I will see what I can do. Physchim62 (talk) 12:53, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Justin, thanks for your message on my discussion page on de-Wikipedia. The picture is definitely not public domain in Germany. But you're right, for en-Wikipedia, US laws apply: According to [1], it might fall under the condition of "Published in a language other than English and without subsequent republication with a copyright notice", so it could be PD-US. --Svencb 11:04, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Please note that to apply for PD-US, material needs to have been first published in the US before 1923. I can not see that applying to the images of Giorgio de Chirico. For reference, see Public_domain#United_States_law / Fred-Chess 07:17, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From WP:PD I also read "the 1923 date does not apply to unpublished works." WP:PD#Published_vs._unpublished_works. So it is essential to find out when the work was first published. Paintings are usually not published. / Fred-Chess 06:08, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Melancholy&MysteryofaStreet.jpg. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to indicate why we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use GFDL to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies under Wikipedia's fair use guidelines, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you want the image to be deleted, tag it as db-unksource.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.

Linking dates[edit]

Hi. I noticed you linked the date (May 2002) on The Time of the Daleks. Dates like this should not be linked: months should not be linked unless the article is talking about the month itself, e.g. a mention that August was named after Augustus Caesar. Years should only be linked if there is a specific prominence (e.g., a person's birth year).

Dates should be wikilinked when they are of the format Day Month Year, Month Day Year or Day Month (without a year), in which case the day and month should be linked together as shown. This allows the system to see that it is a date and to format it according to the reader's preferences as specified in the "my preferences" link at the top of the page. However, if there is no day specified, the month should not be linked alone. For more details, see WP:DATES. Thanks. —Whouk (talk) 08:47, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's a bit subjective. There is a case for saying that a year of release could be worth linking, but it would be the only year on the page that would. I tend towards not linking as I don't think it adds any value, but it's a matter of opinion. —Whouk (talk) 16:53, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Executive producer on Big Finish pages[edit]

Hey, Justin. I just noticed that you've added an executive producer credit on some of the Big Finish pages that didn't have one listed. However, Jac Rayner isn't listed as executive producer in any stories after The Next Life. (She may still be serving in that capacity, but she's not listed in the liner notes any more.) —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 01:33, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This category was previously deleted on 17 February 2006 after a CfD process, as unneeded (a category for a single article), and thus its recreation has been speedily deleted. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:43, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Metaphysical paintings[edit]

Hi! Thanks a lot for your addings to Giorgio De Chirico, which is my favourite painter. Just some notes:

 1. De Chirico had nothing of Greek, and I removed this nationality reference from all the articles.
 2. In the categories, add the title of the painting so it will be in alphabetical order in the cat. page (see what I did in The Disquieting Muse, for example).
 3. You should add the "thumb" mark to all images, as per Wikipedia:Manual of Style. Better, if you have data, you could use the painting template that you can find used in Cardsharps or Gare Montparnasse (The Melancholy of Departure).

Ciao and good work!!!--Attilios 09:17, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Dancing Columns.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Dancing Columns.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Unspecified source for Image:MarineAirTerminalexterior.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:MarineAirTerminalexterior.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self-no-disclaimers tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 12:31, 16 March 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Liftarn 12:31, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate images uploaded[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Magritte36.jpg. A machine-controlled robot account noticed that you uploaded the same image twice: as Image:Magritte36.jpg and also as Image:Magritte36.JPG. The latter copy of the file has been marked for speedy deletion since it is redundant. If this sounds okay to you, there is no need for you to take any action.

This is an automated message- you have not upset or annoyed anyone. In the future, you may save yourself some confusion if you supply a meaningful file name and remember exactly which name you chose (file names are case sensitive, including the extension) so that you won't lose track of your uploads. For tips on good file naming, see Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions about this notice, or feel that the deletion is inappropriate, please contact User:Staecker, who operates the robot account. Staeckerbot 00:47, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

René Magritte image rearrangement[edit]

Nice job on that. I took a stab at a rearrangment after revisiting the article recently and seeing someone had set every image to the same size and stacked them all up along the right border. Your arrangement is a definite improvement over mine. Regards, CliffC 02:06, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Freyja's_Castle.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Freyja's_Castle.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is either no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use, or else the rationale given is not valid. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — pd_THOR | =/\= | 04:06, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Giorgio de Chirico (portrait).jpg, by Remember the dot (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Giorgio de Chirico (portrait).jpg fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

Image description page for image on the Commons

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:Giorgio de Chirico (portrait).jpg, please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 03:30, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free use disputed for Image:Topographic.jpg[edit]

Giorgio de Chirico images are not public domain[edit]

Thanks for showing an interest in the Giorgio de Chirico category!

The 1923 US public domain date only applies to published works. Being unique and one of a kind objects, paintings are not considered "published works". Limited edition prints like the woodcuts produced by M. C. Escher before 1923 are published and therefore would belong in the public domain in the United States and other countries where the 1923 date applies. Paintings created by an artist who died 70 to 100 years ago (depending on the regional law) are also in the public domain.

This issue used to confuse me a great deal. I originally uploaded almost all of these images with a pd tag. Justin Foote 00:23, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, thanks for pointing that out to me. After reading Wikipedia:Public domain#Artworks, I see that you are right. Thanks again! —Remember the dot (talk) 02:14, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Surrealists[edit]

Hi, "Paintings by xxx" categories are the way to go - things like Category:Artist name are highly likely get deleted, or renamed to paintings by... at some point, as "eponymous categories", which are disliked unless there are many sorts of articles. Put the biography article in the category description page, and don't forget to add all the relevant parent cats. Johnbod 01:01, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:The Magician's Birthday.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:The Magician's Birthday.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Fair use rationale for Image:In the Wake of Poseidon.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:In the Wake of Poseidon.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. 218.217.207.64 (talk) 11:02, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Eno Taking Tiger Mountain.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Eno Taking Tiger Mountain.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 07:05, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:Zeit 1972.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Zeit 1972.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

 • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
 • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Marine_Air_Terminal_mural.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 23:03, 27 December 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 23:03, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image tagging for File:Marine Air Terminal mural.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Marine Air Terminal mural.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

Thanks for uploading File:Before and After Science.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. File:Music_for_Airports_back.jpg[edit]

I have tagged File:Music_for_Airports_back.jpg as no rationale, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Some examples can be found at Wikipedia:Use rationale examples. Please also consider using article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. That is a key Lighthouse album, so I personally am surprised to see that One Fine Morning does not have a page.
And who has been working on the Great Canadian Discography project?
I don't know who that would be.

Thanks for uploading File:Dark Abstraction.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Werieth (talk) 20:09, 1 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Mama, Papa is Wounded!.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Mama, Papa is Wounded!.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the file description page and add the text below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
 2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 16:42, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hello, I've been working on the articles on Roach's albums. I'll evaluate each individually, but it looks like none of them meet WP:NALBUM or WP:GNG. I've redirected them, so they will remain useful to readers, and if the albums become notable, or you have info or sources to show my assessment was wrong, they can be returned to articles at the click of a button. I used to think all albums deserved articles and had a few redirected myself; sorry to undo you work, but they will still remain useful. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 05:42, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
