deleted: A platform in a software context refers to a hardware or software structure that enables other software applications to run on a device or cpu. Platforms are a crucial element for APIs . A platform often refers to an operating system. However they are not always the same. Some examples of a platform which are not operating systems are Java and BREW. The term 'platform' is a bit ambiguous and encompasses other definitions but a platform and APIs are crucial for example, to software developers and vendors in order to create software applications on a new chip. Java is both a language and a platform as it enables other software to run.
