Untitled[edit]

The Spanish language article has:

Martín Chambi nace en una familia de campesinos quechuahablantes en una de las regiones más deprimidas del Perú, a finales del siglo XIX. En su condicion de indio y desheredado, la pobreza y la muerte del cabeza de familia hace emigrar al joven Martín Chambi, con sólo catorce años, a buscar trabajo en las multinacionales que explotan las minas de oro de Carabaya en la selva a orillas del rio Inambari.

I translated this as:

Martín Chambi was born into a Quechua-speaking peasant family in one of the poorest regions of Peru, at the end of the nineteenth century. As an Indian without fortune, poverty and the death of the head of the family led him to leave his native village at the age of only 14 to find work for the foreign companies that operated the Carabaya gold mines in the jungle on the banks of the River Inambari.

An anon (80.119.131.136) has recently edited it to:

Martín Chambi was born into a Quechua-speaking peasant family in one of the poorest regions of Peru, at the end of the nineteenth century. When his father went to work in a Carabaya gold mine on the banks of the River Inambari, Martin went along.

Unfortunately, this person gave no references for the change. I personally do not independently know the facts of whether Chambi's father was dead or alive when he went to the mines. Offhand, I am inclined to trust the Spanish-language Wikipedia, but I will not revert this without evidence. However, a reference one way or the other & a change reflecting that reference would sure be appreciated. -- Jmabel 20:20, 12 Apr 2004 (UTC)

According to the book (see publications section) the amended version is correct, Chambi accompanied his father to the mines. I can't find any mention of his father's death in the book. Samatarou 06:12, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
