Seattle thing

Hi--I'm going to post that guy's paper to a History of Seattle article. It'll be too hard to incorporate as is into the current Seattle article. I'll just post it initially and then wikify part of it, hopefully others will be able to help, and then of course there will be actual edits, copy and otherwise. Lukobe 12/4/03 6:02 PST

Hello, regarding your recent move of Martin Fierro to Martín Fierro, please use the built-in "move this page" feature. Doing so will move not only the content of the page to a new title, but will move all the editing history along with it. Since you copy-and-pasted, the edit history is now scattered between Martin Fierro and Martín Fierro. Thanks, —Minesweeper 14:00, 4 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Romania

There should be some articles about Romania, that are not to find in the English Wikipedia. Please see Gutza's talk page on the Romanian Wikipedia --Danutz 9 Dec 2003 21:00 (UTC)

Error in translating. Someseni was outside of the Cluj-Napoca city area, but was incorporated in it in 1989. The sentance to be translated was Aeroportul Someşeni se află în afara zonei urbane a oraşului Cluj-Napoca, într-o fostă comună (Someşeni), care a devenit după anul 1989 cartier de periferie al oraşului.Someseni airport is situated outside the Cluj-Napoca city area, in an ex-municipality (Someseni), that became a neighbourhood in the outskirts of the town after 1989.

Question

Joe, as a native of Seattle myself, I have to say two things. One is that I'm so glad you're expanding its history article! I think you're doing a great job. The second, though, is a minor quibble: why "Silicon Forest"? It strikes me as an odd heading, and is a phrase I've never heard applied to Seattle (and while I'm not completely hip, I find it odd I haven't). Is it a usage peculiar to you? At any rate, I'm suggesting we call it "Recent History" or something a little plainer, just for simplicity's sake: I just wanted to run it by you out of courtesy, and because I did want to thank you for the work you've done. Any thoughts? Thanks, Jwrosenzweig 00:56, 11 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I would think we can come up with something catchier than "recent history". "Silicon Forest" is moderately widely used. Google gives over 5,000 hits, though its hard to quickly sort out how many of those might be from the company of that name. Feel free to change it, I promise not to be offended.

In case you didn't notice, this is not mostly my material, its somebody's paper that was dumped into the site. There's still a lot of work to do. The man doesn't seem to even notice that a labor movement exists, this in a town that had a General Strike in 1926. But it's better than nothing, and it's a start. I still have to hit up the paper itself for his references, etc., but I'm busy the rest of the evening & will be on it tomorrow. Hack away, but I'd appreciate if you leave it to me to integrate the major "undigested" material that I'm in the middle of grappling with.

-- Jmabel 01:04, 11 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Joe, thanks for the quick reply! Well, I just must be less hip than I thought I was...it's a clever little name for this time period, so I think I'll leave it, seeing as it's obviously reasonably widespread. I will of course let you handle the undigested material -- once you're done, though, I think I'll jump in on this page where I can. I've taught Wash. State Hist. a few times, and can think of some little tidbits I'd want to add. I do intend to wait, though, until you finish shaping the page: bravo to you for taking on a tougher job, and for handling it quite well! Best of luck, Jwrosenzweig 20:51, 11 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Utilities

Hi, I'm not quite sure what you're trying to do at Wikipedia:Wikipedia:, but do you know that Wikipedia:Utilities already exists. It seems your new page might duplicate this. There's also a more extensive list at Wikipedia:List of articles in the Wikipedia namespace. Angela. 08:45, 18 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Utilities is linked to from the Main Page and from Wikipedia:Recentchanges so I can't see a way of making it more obvious than that. It's also linked to from two of the pages I listed here when you first joined, but for some reason you chose to delete those links with a rather rude message so perhaps you never went to those pages. If you want a digest of them, the only way to do this is on your user page, or a subpage of it. Most people here do that because everyone finds different links useful, so a digest for one person wouldn't work for another. Just go through the list and put the ones you find most useful somewhere like User:Jmabel/Utilities. Angela. 10:22, 18 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound so accusing earlier. Some people would say that you can do what you like with your own user talk page anyway, so there isn't a strict protocol as such. If you want to edit the help page - go ahead. Be bold! Angela. 11:44, 18 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Not about clarity

It's not about clarity. It's just that when somebody reads that article in a couple of years "The last few" years won't mean what you want them to. Zocky 18:59, 19 Dec 2003 (UTC)

It's not about clarity. It's just that when somebody reads that article in a couple of years "The last few" years won't mean what you want them to. Zocky 18:59, 19 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Agreed. Hopefully by then someone will have edited it appropriately. Much the same problem exists with biographies of almost all living people ("is married, has n children). Britannica has the same problem. Jmabel 21:56, 19 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I agree that that's a given for people or events that are still going on. However, for most of people, information about number of children or marital status is quite likely not to change in mid term (or at all). "Last couple of years" won't mean the same in any article. See my point? Zocky 00:21, 20 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Sure. And, please, it was the deliberately vague "last few" instead of the guaranteed-to-be-quickly-outdated "last couple." If you have a better wording for that article (Zdub si Zdub) please, make the edit. This was my deliberate choice to be vague in my wording about something where my knowledge was vague. Jmabel 00:24, 20 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Re: WTO

Joe, I don't even know if it's still an issue for you, but regarding your question at the Reference Desk, I volunteer myself to help you. I do not know the database very well, but as a sysop I have the ability to view some (if not perhaps all...about this I am unclear) deleted pages. Can you suggest page titles that may have been deleted so that I can check them for the information you're seeking? Jwrosenzweig 21:03, 31 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Yeah, not really my article - from the 1911 Britannica. Added a reference. john 23:34, 31 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Wiki Project Ethnic Groups

I love your idea about creating a project on Ethnic Groups, but I couldn't find the talk paged alluded at the link on the wikiprojects page. I would like to be a participant in it if possible. Also I am trying to start a wikiproject on US Regions. Please post on my talk page if you are interested in my project or want me to participate in yours.

JCarriker 2:01 3 Jan 2004 (CST)

When I click on the link, WikiProject Ethnic Groups on the Wikiproject page, I am automatically directed to the edit page, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Wikipedia:WikiProject_Ethnic_Groups&action=edit and therefore see no talk page link. I would also like it if you would become a participant in the proposed wiki project us regions. If you want more information on my proposal, I'll post it here. Please say yes! The regions and their application are a mess.
JCarriker 2:27 3 Jan 2004 (CST)
I was waiting for someone to join me. I did not want to act unilaterly, as I have been critisized for in the past. I will put the Project up immediately. Please edit it and add your name to participants. I will do the same at Ethnic Groups.
JCarriker

Thanks for your invitation, I have added my name to particiants, but can't promise to be very active. My limited interest is in some articles about native American (Indian) tribal groups associated with the American revolution. Any updates or aricles I work in, I'll try to follow any template the project sets up as a standard, but I can't see many other major contributions. Thanks, and good luck in a difficult subject area. Joe, I have given an NPOV edit to the Los Macheteros article. Please feel free to make any edits, comments, or suggestions necessarily. Maio 22:10, 3 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Re: Sans-culottes

Sorry about the huge lag in reply time (went abroad). You're right about the Sans-culottes being Paris-specific, but I think it's important to at least mention the peasants and Sans-culottes in the section on the 3rd Estate, especially because of the latter's significance later on. And then mention that the bourgouis were the most politically powerful of the social classes. (PS I'm no expert on the French Revolution, so please correct me if anything I say is wrong) --Alex S 01:46, 6 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Re: Census Bureau Regions & Template

I posted a response to you're question on the page. I hope it answers you're concerns about the censue bureau regions. Feel free to start disussing the templates for both offical and unofficial regions on the talk page too. Also I have crreated an article link to the Mbundu peoples of southwestern Africa in my article about Ann Nzinga Mbande, it has no text yet and would be the perfect place to test you're ethnic group template. They are spread through out northern Angola, and Boma-Matidi-Kinshasa/Brazzaville-Pointe Noir area of both Congos.

Re: September 11th truth movement

The page had already been deleted, with content that actually wasn't ranting; the new version not only didn't address the objections to the old one, it took a positive downhill turn.

Romania during World War II

Hi, I'm not familiar with that article so I don't know whether the comment belongs there at all. If there is a better article such a thing could be moved to then that might be a better option. If not, it could stay there, but if and only if it is actually attributed to who made the accusations. It seems inappropriate to just add it in without any statement as to who said it. I think you are very wise to try and avoid an edit war over what could potentially be a contentious topic. Usually the best way to avoid a conflict is to leave such statements in but to make it very clear who said them, and in what context they said them. This approach is recommended by the Wikipedia:NPOV tutorial which you might find useful. If you can't attribute it to anyone, then it possibly shouldn't be included if it unverifiable. Hope that helps. Angela. 20:18, Jan 13, 2004 (UTC)

PDA

  • Thank you so much for answering my PDA question. But a magnet would destroy the PDA and delete the operating system. Do you know any way to permanently delete only some portions of the memory, and not the operating system? thank you. Optim 00:27, 2 Feb 2004 (UTC)

"Argument" with Wetman is not any pleasure for me. However, I suppose that the fact that I try to correct obviously false information is normal reaction. I will be happy to discuss any problem arising with anybody concerning the facts included in articles. I tried to start a dialog with Wetman to solve the problem. He did not answer even once on my aruments. Instead he started to threat me and to offend me. You can check it as well. He also falsely accused me that I deleted content of his page. Lets imagine that someone writes in Wikipedia that modern Jews are not descendants of ancient Jews. That love to kill Palestinians, the only owners of the territories belonging to Israel. That Jews kill Christian children because of religious reasons. And that they are born traitors. In such circumstancies you try explain that it is nonsens. But what if your opponent do not react on your arguments and explanations. Instead he starts to threat you and calls that you are a Jewish chauvinist who suppress inconvinient information. I had disagreements with many poeple on Wikipedia. But it always was an exchange of different points of view, finally ending with some kind of consensus. Wetman is the first person who even do not try to discuss. User:Yeti

How patient you are Jmabel. Ruthenia is all yours. I would never have got involved, except that kind of nationalist dishonesty gives me the creeps. Not a good motivation for editing, eh. Wetman 06:51, 4 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Quick favor -- I have added a chronology section to Abbey Road infobox add Catherine Munro's suggestion, but it automatically treats Yellow Submarine as a header. How do I fix that so it isn't in bold? Tuf-Kat

Thanks for clarifying the info on the Socialist Appeal page. I originally deleted the link because I thought you meant the RCP (UK) of the 1980s and 90s (which is now defunct and discussed at Revolutionary Communist Party (UK)). Despite the similar names, they have no connection with the RCP (USA), the UK group not being Maoist or infact particularly Communist in any way. Warofdreams 13:32, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hi Jmabel,

Thanks for the warm welcome to your project and your city. I checked out your SCN webpage and already found some interesting stuff. I've also been impressed reading about the history of the various neighborhoods I've cycled through as I've lived here (3 so far in 5 months, another soon! gah! why is good housing so hard to find? :) Peace, DanKeshet

Uqbar

I strongly suspect no one has seen the problems at Uqbar. The page history shows that the only edits are from anonymous users, yourself, and someone adding an interlanguage link. It also links to only one article, so is fairly well hidden. I suggest you list it on Wikipedia:Cleanup if you feel it has potential to become a real article. People are more likely to see it there than on a talk page they'll likely never visit. However, not everything in Cleanup does get looked at. If the issue remains, you could try rewriting it, or just remove everything that you can not verify. Would it be possible to turn it into a couple of sentences that are accurate? A very short stub that can be verified is lot better than a longer one with an accuracy dispute. In theory, the accuracy dispute notice ought to be enough as people are supposed to use the backlinks from Wikipedia:Accuracy dispute to find the problematic articles, but in practice there are simply not enough people interested in doing this. Hope that helps. Angela. 09:56, Feb 21, 2004 (UTC)

Totalitarian democracy

Thanks, Jmabel, for your suggestions re. the above. As no one else has provided feedback, I will allow the article to rest for a while. I've been through it several times in an effort to NPOV it, though I suspect that any article involving politics or religion will be POV is someone's books. I note you have an extensive and impressive article list of topics related to this one. I would be pleased if you could take another look at it and give me a quick impression of how it might be improved. Thanks. Denni 06:32, 2004 Feb 22 (UTC)

---

An excellent lesson on (N)POV - thank you!! Your changes are both non-intrusive and fair, and I will follow up on your rewrite suggestions once this note is posted. Since I have no vested interest on either side of the issue (I, like you if your writing is any indication, see myself as a liberal socialist, though I'm not especially politically active) and my primary purpose in Wiki is to provide accuracy and thoroughness in whatever I do. Uqbar

I'd say that if you want to rewrite Uqbar then you should do that. Pages like cleanup are more for calling attention to it when you don't want to or can't make the changes yourself. I've added a bit to Wikipedia:Accuracy dispute explaining that articles with a dispute can be listed on cleanup or peer review. Does that help at all? Angela. 19:17, Feb 22, 2004 (UTC)

None taken. Thanks for your input on the matter- thats a difficult page edit. My additions certianly needed some work- I just couldn't believe it talked so little about the event's relation to the cold war, aside from not totally liking its somewhat tilted tone. I found these sites [1 ],[2], [3] helpfull in understanding it. I didn't realize there was so much controversy over the matter- certainly I can appreciate your strategy. Perhaps I should have taken the same route! Greyengine5 01:30, 1 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Borges Acevedo?

Is there a reason why Jorge Luis Borges's second surname Acevedo should be added to his name? AFAIK Borges never signed as "Borges Acevedo" or referred to himself like that -- only "Borges" or "J.L.B.". Moreover, using both parents' last names is not common or customary at all in Argentina. I just wanted to ask rather than deleting the change since there may be a reason you made it. In any case the Acevedo ascent is acknowledged by mentioning Borges's mother Leonor Acevedo...
