Nuance[edit]

In addition to some basic information about the institution, including an absolutely pointless list of campus buildings (And by the way, Nick, Hamilton's is not one of them), this page should have more information about the university's perilous financial troubles at the end of the 1990s and recent controversies involving the administration, its campus, and the neighborhood. Also, as I'm sure you know, the sign that appears in one of this page's three low quality photographs is not actually part of the university campus. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.241.163.40 (talk) 21:56, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I wholeheartedly agree with this and many other comments on the talk page. In fact, there are so many suggested and necessary changes that I stopped counting and gave up on trying to fix it in one sitting... Anyone have ideas or suggestions what to fix first? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.46.55.168 (talk) 16:47, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Beginning lines should state something to the effect "Loyola University is a private, comprehensive research university located in the city of chicago. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.88.133.20 (talk) 19:19, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Verifiability[edit]

To clarify why I added the {{verify}} tag to the page I will address just one thing from the current revision: The Beginnings and Expansions section. This section, as it currently stands, is full of so many holes that I might as well delete and start from scratch (which I will probably do over the coming weeks after reviewing the Official University Archives.) Until I am satisfied that the information in that article is correct and has been verified, I am leaving that tag on the page. Hopefully everyone understands and some enterprising Wikipedians join me. Thanks! --Nick Catalano (Talk)

Is there anything in particular that you notice to be blatantly incorrect? Or are you just assuming that there is misinformation? I don't feel comfortable having that up there unless I know for a fact that there is something wrong with it. As far as I know it is correct and up to date, of course I may be incorrect, so forgive me if I ask you to provide specific examples. I will leave the tag up in order to give you time to do so. But in the future please provide specifics rather than blanket statements. Spikethehawk 01:00, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here are a few

  • Water Tower isn't University Owned Land
  • The latest expansion was not the purchase of Mund in 1991... In fact, I don't even believe it was a purchase as much as their lease just ran out..
  • The School of Education must have closed down because they just made it a full major this year
  • A few revisions ago there was a campus that Loyola didn't own for at least 5 years
  • Martin D'Arcy Museum of Art is not open any longer... There is the Loyola University Museum of Art now
  • We might want to say that the Martin D'Arcy collection was moved from the Cudahy Library to the LUMA downtown. It is scheduled to open in Spring 2007 - mlaird1
  • Niles Campus? I have never heard of it... There was a campus that started with an M, but I can't remember it.
  • You're thinking of the Mallinckrodt Campus in Willmette, IL. It's no longer there, but should the article mention it? I'm not exactly sure what went on there, I just know I used to pass a sign on the highway on the way to Loyola Academy. -mlaird1
  • The Niles Campus used to exist near the intersection of Harlem and Toughy in Niles. It was torn down in 1994 and the location is now the site of a park.--66.134.227.18 11:02, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Skyscraper Building is no longer refered to as Skyscraper by the University

I can't even verify half of the other stuff... Tag needs to stay up for awhile while it is worked on... --Nick Catalano (Talk) 02:00, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Plus this article doesn't cite a single source. It's in serious need of being revamped. Jtrost 02:22, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I'll concede some of those. But I have a few contentions to make:
  • The article never states that the Water Tower is university owned, it states that it is located close to the campus
The "Landmarks" section of the article implies that Water Tower is part of Loyola University. H Padleckas 05:38, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Niles College of Loyola University existed until 1994 when it changed its name to St Joseph College Seminary and moved to its present location on the North side of the campus. Scroll halfway down
  • Skyscraper, while not officially used by administrators is used in great frequency by students, as well as being recognised by the administration as another name for the Mundelein Center.
And let me make it clear, I wasn't doubting you, I just would prefer if there be some discussion before the placement of a tag on the article so that we could work to fix it beforehand. Spikethehawk 03:18, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Understood... Also, I'm almost positive that the university does not "Own" nor even "Run" the Seminary, but rather the Archdiocese does... so that raises the question, was the Niles campus ever a LOYOLA campus? I'll look it up later on in the week --Nick Catalano (Talk) 21:32, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
History of St. Joseph College Seminary and various other places on their website suggest that St. Joseph "is affiliated with Loyola University Chicago, which is the degree granting institution for the seminary" (especially since the name is now St. Joseph College Seminary of Loyola), but that it is not owned or run by Loyola and didn't attempt the full name until the move. So, the Niles campus was probably never part of LUC.

Accuracy[edit]

After reviewing some parts of the article with the offical university archives, I have decided to remove some blatently incorrect information and add a dispute tag to the entry. Please do not remove or revert without discussing here first. Nick Catalano (Talk) 22:08, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Haven't had the time to look up the factual accuracy, but I'm noting the specific changes: factual contentions so I and others can come back easily. Euphoria 03:01, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Specifically what information on the page do you think is inaccurate? Jtrost 05:05, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
See Loyola History --Nick Catalano (Talk) 05:31, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. How about we change it rather than debating about whether or not to do something, while a disputed marked sits on the page making it look like there's a huge controversy at Loyola? Anyone object if I do so right now? No? Sounds good. Spikethehawk 07:00, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Under the section "Beginnings and Expansions", the Loyola University School of Dentistry is mentioned. On the internet, I looked for current references to Loyola University Dental School but found none, although there was evidence there was such a dental school in the past. A call to Loyola University revealed to me that Loyola no longer has a Dental School. H Padleckas 05:38, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kappa Beta Gamma National Sorority is NOT a member of the National Panhellenic Conference. Viannah 04:47, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The list of buildings in the Buildings section lists only buildings at the Lake Shore Campus. Water Tower Campus buildings as well as the Medical Center (in Maywood) and the Soccer field on Devon Ave. have been entirely left out.--66.134.227.18 10:59, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have started adding buildings listed on the official campus guides at http://www.luc.edu/values/campus/pdfs/lsc05.pdf and http://www.luc.edu/values/campus/pdfs/wtc07.pdf to the building list. --66.134.227.18 08:16, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Currently, the link for Madonna Della Strada under the Buildings sections links to the Madonna Della Strada artwork page, and not the page for Madonna Della Strada Chapel. Vercingetorix08 (talk) 07:14, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

University size is also inaacurate. After recent expansion (Lake Shore), university is well beyond the 45 acres stated —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.88.133.20 (talk) 18:46, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Medical Campus also inacurrate. After purchase of the Gottlied Medical miedical campus is above 100 acres. Water campus is alo not mentioned. Not certain of the exact size, but somewhere around 10 acres. Section on campus size should look more like:

Campus: 60 acre Lake Shore Campus, 10 acre Water Tower Campus 100 acre (283,000 m²) Medical Center 5 acre (20,234 m²) Rome Center —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.88.133.20 (talk) 19:09, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Grammar[edit]

This article needs to be proofread by several people. Grammatical errors are detrimental to the article. Yep Yep Yep 4:30, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

University Size is also inaccurate. Since lake shore expansion, university acres goes well beyond the 45 acres stated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.88.133.20 (talk) 18:45, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Consolidation of Articles[edit]

In accordance with the agreement made by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, which stated that only Loyola University Chicago retained the legal right to call itself Loyola University, this article should be moved in its entirety to the article named Loyola University. All other uses would be accessible through a disambiguation page, however an article for LUC would be located on the Loyola University page only. Spikethehawk 16:38, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a sourcee online for this? Jtrost 17:20, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
However, LUC has not chosen to identify itself as simply "Loyola University," all official materials use "Loyola University Chicago" and LUC has also claimed it does not want to use simply "Loyola University" in order to avoid confusion with the other Jesuit institutions. [1] I suggest that this page be returned to Loyola University Chicago and that "Loyola University" once again become a disambiguation page. -- SmokeDetector47 02:14, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In regards to the 1996 AJCU agreement, the only source I can find is the articles on the Loyolas (Chicago, New Orleans, Maryland) explicitly stating this, Marymount excluded. I'd be willing to agree to make Loyola University Chicago the main LUC article, as long Loyola University redirects to Loyola University (disambiguation). Therefore any confusion would be avoided as to the proper usage of the phrase.Spikethehawk 19:27, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm confused as to what you're trying to say here. The main LUC article? It is the only LUC article. Do you mean to separate it from the rest of the articles on the disambiguation page, or what are you proposing? Euphoria 22:21, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
What I mean is to revert Loyola University Chicago as the article containing all the information on LUC. Along with this to use Loyola University (disambiguation) as the disam page, with Loyola University redirect to said disam page. Spikethehawk 22:26, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Photos[edit]

Can't someone find better photos than the ones shown? The Loyola sign photo looks like this is a third-rate school. Something a little classier? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.162.143.5 (talk) 15:38, 13 May 2008 (UTC) Please include photos of water tower campus and omit photos of Ignatius Loyola Statue. Photo of Ignatius Loyola is outdated. Current statue stands in the new commons building. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.88.133.20 (talk) 18:50, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rendering Issues[edit]

- [[This sucks; put back the photos]] I removed the following pictures after it was presenting rendering issues at higher resolutions in both IE and Firefox. Perhaps a gallery is best for the future? --Nick Catalano (Talk) 05:48, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Can you give a further description than "rendering issues at higher resolutions"? It works fine at 1024 and at 1280 for me, though I can't test the higher ones easily. Euphoria 05:56, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The logos tend to merge into other sections of the page... --Nick Catalano (Talk) 06:13, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The uncited comment above makes me bring this topic up again: what exactly is the problem with blending into the other sections? These pictures have been gone for awhile now, to the detriment of the article. If no one can find a good way to add them back without minor rendering issues, I think we should just add them back. The article looks a lot worse without them. Euphoria 16:37, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Loyola University is located in north Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood.

Loyola University's downtown campus is on the Magnificent Mile, fronting world-famous Chicago landmarks: Water Tower (only surviving building of the Great Chicago Fire) and the John Hancock Center (one of the tallest buildings in America).

File:Chicagowatertowerpump.jpg
Loyola University Chicago has the only campus directly on Chicago's Magnificent Mile of North Michigan Avenue.
Three of these pictures are claimed fair use. Therefore they should only be reinserted into the article if a detailed rationale can be made to justify fair use—as all three would be easily replaced with a freely licensed alternative I suspect that no such justification is posible. JeremyA 15:11, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No need to mention Mallinckrodt Campus. Was temporarily part of University and did not have much of a historic impact. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.88.133.20 (talk) 19:12, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

John Egan (as described in list of famous alumni)[edit]

Did Loyola's John Egan ever actually play professional basketball? He's not the same person as Johnny Egan. Zagalejo 05:31, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't look like it via Google searches. He seems to be a fairly successful lawyer, and was inducted into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame, but I think that is just for his contributions to the '63 championship team at Loyola. Euphoria 14:00, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ramblers Origin?[edit]

The current section concerning the Ramblers states "The Loyola Ramblers title is originated in the late 1800s as a nickname given to the school's football team." This is unreferenced. In addition, another website, http://loyolaramblers.cstv.com/trads/loyc-trads.html , which claims to be "The Official Athletic Site of Loyola University Chicago" has a section which contradicts the story of origin for the "Ramblers" name. Could someone please look into this and correct that section of the article if necessary? --66.134.227.18 02:07, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The official athletics site and link you provided are correct. The Ramblers name did originate thanks to the school's football team, but not in the late 1800's. The window of time cited in the article is currently incorrect. -- CollegeSportsGuy 02:15, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Luclogo1.png[edit]

Image:Luclogo1.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Mundelein College's height[edit]

What source of information are you using to determine the Mundelein College Skyscraper was the tallest building in Rogers Park when it was constructed? How tall are the Campus Tower Apartments? The Campus Tower Apartment Building WAS built prior to Mundelein and is also fourteen stories tall. —Preceding unsigned comment added by WomenLeadershipArchives (talkcontribs) 22:03, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I see there is now a citation...although citing a secondary source which is not itself cited to a primary source is not usually acceptable research. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.229.170.47 (talk) 00:49, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rogers Park Sign[edit]

Someone please remove this ugly picture. I would take some photos of the campus myself to put up, but I am no longer in Chicago. The campus is becoming very beautiful. The information commons has a gorgeous lawn in front with a waterfall. I'd like to see more pictures that show off some of the recent aesthetic enhancements that the university has undergone. 69.209.121.221 (talk) 07:03, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done. I'll see if I can take some more pictures. (I ride by the campus on the way to the city.) Ameriquedialectics 17:35, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Enrollment breakdown[edit]

So, it seems that Loyola's current enrollment is 16,040: [2] Anyone know how that breaks down in terms of undergrads/postgrads? Zagalejo^^^ 03:26, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have a 'Facts at a Glance' handout from Undergraduate Admissions stating that there are 9,856 undergraduate students. Tvaughn05 00:28, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Clarify namesake[edit]

I visited this page with the somewhat stupid question, "Is this school named for St. Ignatius of Loyola?" and it seems that it is not explicitly stated anywhere in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:249:8B80:5210:499C:F459:9192:1149 (talk) 19:42, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
