UNLV is UNLV. The school in Reno is the University of Nevada. Just look at the websites - UNR Has "Nevada" in big letters, and "Reno" in tiny letters, and refers to the school in brief as just "Nevada." UNLV has UNLV and "University of Nevada, Las Vegas" written out evenly. It refers to the school in brief as UNLV. To be honest, though, I'm not completely sure in this instance. A google news search suggests that it is largely called "University of Nevada, Reno," in non-sports contexts. UNR's official name is currently "University of Nevada, Reno", and has been for some decades. But it was, for a long time, known simply as "University of Nevada"; the name was changed to differentiate it from UNLV. It's mostly in sports contexts that UNR is known "Nevada" these days, and you usually only see the phrase "University of Nevada" when people are referring to the university honorifically or sentimentally (for instance, the alumni association of UNR is the "University of Nevada Alumni Association": http://www.unr.edu/alumni/). A redirect to "University of Nevada, Reno" with disambiguation links to the UCCSN and UNLV would be the most accurate reflection of current usage. However, there is something of a rivalry between UNLV and UNR, and UNR's claim to the title "University of Nevada" is part of that rivalry, so there may be some controversy over making it be a simple redirect. --209.108.217.226 22:54, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Exactly. Keep in mind that website is partly a promotional mechanism, they're not always going to be totally straight about the fine points of a situation. More useful to look at the "fine print" parts, like mailing address, to see the more neutral parts of a website. The cool thing to do with this article would be to describe the nomenclature controversy; although I've always heard it described it as such, was there an actual political fight in the legislature? When I was at school in Reno I occasionally heard references to UNR having gone to court to prove its right to refer to itself as "University of Nevada", but I haven't been able to find any hard facts about this. --209.108.217.226 19:30, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

I agree with 209.108.217.226 I worked for the student newspaper at UNR for many years, and editorial policy was to refer to the school as Nevada in shorthand. This is not to say we never said "the university" or whatnot, but the short-form name was, as a matter of policy, Nevada. Yes, our stubbornness to change IS a kick in the teeth to UNLV, but note that its not just some Wikipedean's grudge, but 40+ years of administrative and freely student-chosen teeth-kicking.

Text Removed from DAB

An editor has chosen to use this article as a "pure DAB." Although I'm not generally against that, I don't think the text taken from this page fits in the "history" section of Nevada's page, either. Is there support or dissent for restoring this text back into the DAB page?

The phrase University of Nevada by itself usually refers to the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), because that was the name by which it was known from the time of its founding in 1874 until its name was changed to "University of Nevada, Reno" in 1969, at the same time as the newly founded "Nevada Southern University" was renamed "University of Nevada, Las Vegas". Although UNR's official name is now "University of Nevada, Reno", several of the university's institutions retain the wording "University of Nevada", including the alumni association, the student government, the campus bookstore, and the athletics department (which refers to the school's teams simply as "Nevada").

I have removed the text from the article because I think it is unnecessary to give an explanation of why UNR is on the page, and if the explanation is needed, it should be on the talk page (which it is). Also, by listing the University of Nevada, Reno at the top of the list, it already implies that the phrase "University of Nevada" most commonly refers to UNR. Thaurisil^t_c 13:10, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Redirect to the University of Nevada, Reno

I have made this page redirect to the University of Nevada, Reno. And see no reason for it not to based on precedent.

First it was formerly known as the University of Nevada. It is also currently the most referred to as the University of Nevada. And its athletic teams are known as just Nevada. Also the medical school is called the University of Nevada School of Medicine, but when looking the the las vegas campus its dental school is called UNLV dental school. Lets now take a look at other Wikipedia articles. University of Nebraska redirects to University_of_Nebraska–Lincoln , even though there a multiple other University of Nebraska campuses' because it was the first to be known as that. Same with the University of Wisconsin redirects to University_of_Wisconsin–Madison and has a disamb on top of the page for others that might also be called that.The University of Texas redirects to the University of Texas at Austin, with a disamb on top of the page. This format makes the most sense to follow.AlaskanNativeRU (talk) 17:58, 20 February 2016 (UTC)
