Isn't this the same thing as a semiring?

Almost but not quite. From what I can tell, the difference is that a rig has identity elements for both multiplication and addition, where a semiring is not guaranteed to have identity elements for either one. Isomorphic 08:05, 24 Feb 2004 (UTC)
