Anime credits[edit]

How come there is no mention of John Woo's work on Appleseed: Ex Machina? Elwin Blaine Coldiron (talk) 21:10, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Irrelevant[edit]

Deleted this part: "the world was not just filled with violence and suffering; it could be beautiful and happy as well." This is totally irrelevant and ridiculously cheesy as well. Intranetusa 21:33, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cultural revolution[edit]

When Woo's Christian parents were faced with persecution from the Cultural Revolution, his family fled to Hong Kong when he was five years old.

That would mean that Woo left around 51. Isn't the Cultural Revolution generally dated from around 65 or 66? I think it suffices to say that his parents were persecuted by the Communist government, which, being Christian, was possible long before the Cultural Revolution. --69.143.128.152 10:59, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)

POV[edit]

I love John Woo, but much of this article feels far too POV. Is "The Killer" really considered "the perfect action film" by anyone other than fans? Who has determined that "Broken Arrow" was "a deeply disappointing film that lacked Woo's trademark style?" By what standards is "Face/Off" "the perfect American vehicle for Woo?" And while it certainly did not turn a profit, I feel it is stretch to claim "Paycheck" was a "disastrous failure." --Feitclub 21:06, Sep 11, 2004 (UTC)

Agreed. I've already started paring this down into something suitable for Wikipedia. Khanartist 04:19, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I like most of your changes, but I feel "mixed reviews" is unfair to Face/Off. I remember seeing it on several "best of 1997" lists, including Time Magazine. 40 of 43 reviews on Rottentomatoes.com are positive. "Mixed reviews" implies a 50/50 situation with no consensus, like Passion of the Christ. I'm going to edit that.

Lo and behold, you're right, mostly positives. I didn't like the film myself, so I guess that affected my memory. Khanartist 16:44, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)

NPOV?[edit]

I would have to agree that most of the article seems to glorify Woo, but perhaps it is justified considering he has made a great impact on both Chinese and American film making. Perhaps the use of the word "perfect" can be avoided or strictly attributed to fan reviews. ~ Wave of Mutilation 04:27, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Killer has a rating of 100% on Rottentomatoes.com. It is indeed the perfect action film. Can't quite dispute that. - Jim 09:26, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
100% on RT is not a "perfect" score. Only those registered on RT is liable and does not express the views of others. And glorifying is against Wiki rules... we'll have to edit it or "cite it as".--sin-man 10:34, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This article should be checked by some uninterested party about NPOV. I am a big fan of Woo myself, but the article does not seem to be in keeping with Wikipedia policies. There are too many sections that sound like a biographical essay as opposed to an encylopedia entry, like "it was three long years" "allowed Woo to do what he did best" "Upping the ante with an all out action film" Since the article is also unsourced, the article as written can be viewed as an opinion or film criticism as opposed to an encylopedia entry to learn more about a major director of the late 20th century. Birthday[edit]

Was John born September 23/1946 or May 1/1946? IMDb has the first date while Wikipedia, the second date. Hotwine8 19:37, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And now, the NNDB have September 22/1948. 216.167.229.208 19:08, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Men of Atalissa[edit]

The article currently says he worked on the documentary Men of Atalissa. However, the Men of Atalissa article makes no mention of this, and news articles about the documentary speaks of what would seem to be a different John Woo -- "John Woo, senior staff editor for video at the Times and former editor with POV Digital."
