eerste nl.wikimedia.org ontmoeting[edit]

Wikipedia Growth[edit]

You are right, the growth of wikipedia is logistic... However, I made some calculations and I found that the maximum rate of growth of wikipedia was reached in August, 2006. I have to find some time to make the graphics and a good report Diego Torquemada 15:38, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for checking my logistic model. The maximum rate of growth might well be a few months sooner as I said because I used 6 months averages. HenkvD 19:54, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ad Konings[edit]

I was glad to see that the Nederland version of Wikipedia already had an article on Konings. It was embarrassing when I saw there was none in English. Thanks for linking to my article! Pseudospecialops 19:15, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

defaultsort is a magic word, not a template[edit]

No big deal, but please use DEFAULTSORT:x,y rather than DEFAULTSORT|x.y. Thanks. :-)Flatterworld 14:39, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. It works with '|', I noticed that ':' was used as well and wondered how that would work for a template. I will use ':' instead. HenkvD 16:52, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Joan Geelvinck[edit]

Het gaat niet om dezelfde Joan Geelvinck, blijkbaar ga je alleen op de naam af en niet op de inhoud.
It is not the same Joan Geelvinck as in the Dutch Wikipedia. Taksen 16:28, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies. You say : "In 1991 Oriach moved again, this time to Normandy, where several retrospectives of his work have been organized; he also shows regularly in his native Catalonia." In fact, he lives already in Normandy but begins to go half the year in Catalogne (Sabadell). Added WP extended-growth model[edit]

15-April-2009: As you suggested, I have updated Wikipedia:Modelling Wikipedia's growth to mention the various models, adding new section "Extended-growth model". The current daily growth rate has subsided from March, so I projected the 3-million-article mark will occur in mid-August 2009, probably on August 14. -Wikid77 (talk) 06:31, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Added new section to the growth modelling page[edit]

Hi, I have added a new section to the page Wikipedia:Modelling Wikipedia's growth, with an improved model for the observed growth rate. It also icludes a seasonal modulation factor that seems to account for 1/2 of the "random" fluctuations in the growth rate since 2006. I hope it makes sense. All the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 06:37, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comments.
Ten parameters do sound like a lot, but it is actually only 2 for the bulk of each phase (without the seasonal factor). That is a straight line in the log plot of N´. If you subtract the straight line, the residual has no trend (except for the seasonal fluctuation), at least to my eyes.
The seasonal factor too is only another 2+epsilon parameters: the amplitude and delay are real numbers, but the frequency is only one bit (the justifiable choices were only 1 or 2).
As for the limit L, the correct figure is 5.9 million. 8 million was a mistake (I used R2 in months^-1 rather than days^-1). One more thing to fix in the tech report...
As for future numbers, I merely computed the limit as explained in the tech report. Running the model for the future is trivial, but I am traveling at the moment and cannot do it now. Will have to wait until thursday.
All the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 02:02, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia four million[edit]

Yep I think you'll win this, I'd change my estimate to March 2012 now if I could. I stupidly based my estimate on the 2-3 million growth rate and failed to take into account a slowing rate in new article creation. I seriously doubt we'll reach 4 million in 2011 now.... A possible refinement to the Gompertz model[edit]

As an experiment, I've tried adding a small exponential term to the Gompertz model: see Wikipedia:Modelling Wikipedia's growth#A possible refinement. It gives a remarkably good fit to the data from 2005 onwards. Whether this reflects the underlying dynamics, or is simply a deomstration that you can fit almost any model to anything with sufficient model parameters, is an interesting question. -- The Anome (talk) 11:05, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't got good like-for-like stats for recent periods (the recent statistics summary tables at http://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/TablesWikipediaDE.htm don't seem to match the dewiki article counter), but I've parsed, resampled, and fitted the data from de:Wikipedia:Meilensteine and posted it to my talk page here (graph here, parameters in the image comment, data set here).
I've also regenerated the prediction, this time without resampling the input data, with real dates instead of fractional years since 2000-01-01, here.
The fit seems almost too perfect to be true -- even capturing the small undulation and inflection point around 2007 -- making me suspect overfitting, but if this is real, the model seems highly effective.
I'd greatly appreciate it if you could try to replicate this, just to check my working.
Now I need a source of good comparable stats for all the Wikipedia editions. -- The Anome (talk) 19:15, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wieringerrandmeer[edit]

Hello HenkvD

Sorry I don't speak Dutch and I'm trying to translate an article from the dutch, concerning the Wieringerrandmeer project. I don't know if this is going to be realised. On november 3rd 2010 the state of Hollande-Noord decided something, but I cannot understand what. If you have time could you tell me what it is ? Or if you speak french, there is a question mark on sentences I cannot understand. (no english page yet) Best regards.

--Laurentleap (talk) 21:02, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Op 3 november 2010 maakte Gedeputeerde Staten van de Provincie Noord-Holland bekend het hele project te willen afblazen wegens het niet rond krijgen van de financiën. Op 15 november besloot Provinciale Staten over het initiatief van GS."
this translates as: on november 3rd the Gedeputeerde staten of the province North Holland anounced to cancel the project because of financial reasons. On november 15th the States-Provincial decided accordingly.
HenkvD (talk) 07:20, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your answer. I have changed the french article accordingly.--Laurentleap (talk) 19:48, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

5 million pool[edit]

Hi. I understand you came to the decision that 80% the way there was the criteria for closing it but don't you think its a little premature? Especially as we have just passed 4 million a lot of people myself included will like to have a fun guess of when we hit 5 million. Could you consider reopening it for a few more weeks?♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:12, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Gotcha. I wonder if it's possible for him to publish the list online somewhere reliable? I'm not sure we can properly keep the list simply based on an otherwise unpublished email, per WP:V. ♠PMC(talk) 16:00, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
