Cleanup[edit]

I have just finished the start of a big cleanup. The article is too short now, but it is much more relevant. It probably has lots of typo's and spelling mistakes, and more needs to be done. Thing that I think would help would be:

Add some pictures, because eveyone likes these and they help get ideas across
Make new articles for

The history, possibly using the old article as a starting point
The research being done there

Add some info from someone who has been there.

This page needs help. It was a borderline desicion to go for a cleanup notice over a complete rewrite. The content seems to be about 35 years out of date. If anyone could add to it (and take a fair bit out too) it would be great. -- Apyule 06:02, 16 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

I've never heard it referred to as anything other than Scott Base, and Antarctica New Zealand uses that term exclusively, as far as I'm aware - see [1]. Grutness...wha? 23:43, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose some people find it weird to refer to it as just Scott because this is a common first name. I just looked at a New Zealand government website and it is always Scott Base. Official names of other stations like the American one are McMurdo Station or the British base Rothera Research Station but as these are not common names it is more comfortable to abrieviate them to just McMurdo and Rothera Polargeo (talk) 07:47, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

An added comment - the only person I know personally who's been there never calls it simply "Scott" - always "Scott Base". "McMurdo Station" is often just called "McMurdo", though. Grutness...wha? 02:01, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Communications Overstatement[edit]

I'm a bit concerned about the way this article talks about the communications links between McMurdo and Scott Base. The article makes it sound like McMurdo station receives phone and data communications primarily from the Scott Base. McMurdo station routes all communications through Black Island the NPOESS satellite system. Perhaps this is outdated. I found one supporting document in a quick search ("New Zealand Telecom provides this service [five new public trunk lines] and all calls are routed through Scott Base"), but that dates back to 1996. -- Avenue (talk) 08:00, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
