Could someone make a list of the receivers of at least some of the awards?

Have added Canadian, Australian, and NZ decorations in order of precedence, but it has become too bulky. Some work needs to be done consolidating the lists, however the difficulty is that each country relates the precedence of its honours in relation to the UK only, and sometimes incompletely, e.g. Canada relates its honours to the OM, CH, etc but excludes all the knightly grades. The fact of the matter is that there is really concept of Commonwealth orders and decorations other than the Victoria Cross.

Possible solution is to list only whole orders (e.g. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath instead of GCB KCB CB, The Order of Canada instead of CC OC CM) and major decorations (e.g. for the UK, VC GC (OM CH strictly orders) DSC MC DFC only) on this page, and to have separate pages for each country with complete lists of orders, decorations and medals.

"(British and) Commonwealth" is redundant since Commonwealth includes Britain, and is inaccurate since it includes republics and native monarchies. "British Commonwealth" may be archaic, but appropriate since it refers to the UK and the old dominions, and the article refers anyway to many obsolete decorations Andrew Yong 16:03, 14 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Combined UK/Aus/NZ[edit]

I've done some rough work on combining the lists here.

Note on syntax: where I have joined up a group with {s, then they are to be treated as a group. Where I have indicated ={, the groups are of equal precedence per the table since I don;t know any better :D. Ask if unsure.

Hm. The line breaks don;t seem to work. Lines should always start with the symbols and end with the abbreviations, and the notes in parentheses should be on the next line down.

Question[edit]

Anybody know about a post war of 1812 era medal called the Naval General Service Medal? Mentioned in the article about James FitzGibbon. Fawcett5 14:41, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. The NGSM was issued in 1847 to surviving claimants of various naval actions from 1793 to 1840. Each battle or action covered by the medal was represented by a clasp on the ribbon; apparently 231 were sanctioned (although the maximum awarded to one man was seven). The medal a variety of actions, from minor skirmishes all the way to battles such as Trafalgar. A point to note is that the medal was only awarded to surviving claimants; one had both to have survived until 1847 and then to actively apply for it. Many didn't, so there are substantially fewer medals issued compared with the number of men who served during this period.

This medal and its army counterpart, the Military General Service Medal, were the first real British campaign medals, the first to be issued to all ranks just for 'being there'.

Title and contents[edit]

This article covers only the orders and decorations of four Commonwealth Realms. Should the title therefore not simply be Commonwealth Realms orders and decorations? Otherwise the awards of 53 nations should be listed here, the majority of which are not awarded by the Sovereign of each of the Commonwealth Realms. --gbambino 16:17, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dominica[edit]

Dominica has been a republic since becoming independent in 1978.

An article titled 'Dominican Honours System' or something to that effect needs to be created.

Ironically, Dominicans are still conferred British Royal Honours, including damehoods and knighthoods (whose recipients use the titles as well as the relevant postnominal letters). – (202.89.142.84 (talk) 02:29, 28 April 2012 (UTC))[reply]

UK – Order of the Garter and the Order of the Thistle[edit]

Neither the Order of the Garter nor the Order of the Thistle are issued under the Australian Honours System. However, the Order of Merit and the Royal Victorian Order which are conferred by The Sovereign in exercise of the Royal Prerogative are issued under the Australian Honours System. Furthermore this entry should be renamed Orders of the Commonwealth realms or decorations should should be added. Anthony Staunton (talk) 06:08, 4 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Correction of the above paragraph. The Orders of the Garter, Thistle, Merit and the Royal Victorian Order are British (Imperial) Orders. Since they are conferred by The Sovereign in exercise of the Royal Prerogative the Australian Honours System lists them on the Australian Order of Wear. Other British Orders, Decorations and Medals to Australians awarded since 5 October 1992 are foreign awards under the Australian Honours System. ETC[edit]

In the 'United Kingdom' section, what do all the "etcs" mean? As in 'Order of the Garter (Also awarded to New Zealanders, etc)', [my emphasis].

This is a list not an article. It only lists orders and does not list decorations. The phrase 'awarded by the sovereign in right of each nation' needs rewording. Only the list of British orders includes incomplete and arbitrary information on eligibility. Since all orders listed have their own article that is the place where eligibility and other details should be found. The details in brackets should be deleted.
