Untitled[edit]

Some suggestions from just reading through for those who are working on this page. In the History Section, Tiwanaku is mentioned twice, but it is not explained how that relates to the Aymara people and the Aymara are not mentioned on the Tiwanaku page either.

Also the page talks about Aymara populations in modern Bolivia, Peru and Chile, but the geography section only discusses Aymara locations in Bolivia. The connection between the Map of Chile to the Aymara is also unclear. I understand the Aymara have had a more central political role in Bolivia but the politics section could use some information about Aymara in Chile and Peru as well to balance the page.

Removed the pseudo-linguistic pap about Aymara's conception of time, being neither psychologically nor linguistically valid, and on the same level as saying that all languages are descended from (modern) Basque.

I removed a lot of material that was relevant to the language not the people (or so I think). I also made the link to the language page clearer - It took me some time to discover there was actually also a seperate page on the language, and I suspect that's why other peopel added some stuff here that should have been on the other page. The history has been cut up a bit, and I changed the stats from "language speakers" to "aymara people", tho I'm not sure how valid that is ... it could take some reworking by someone who actually knows about that stuff ^-^ (I also deleted some outdated discussion) Flammifer 04:56, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The stats are not in line with the stats from Bolivia, which says there are 2m Aymara in Bolivia alone. DanKeshet 22:59, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)

I think the stats up are for Aymara language speakers (leftover from when the page was about both), but apparently some ethnic Aymara don't speak Aymara language. DanKeshet June 28, 2005 22:05 (UTC)

Population?[edit]

Why does the 1st paragraph of this article say that they have a population of 2.3 million but the infobox says they number 1.6 million? Which one is right? --Hottentot 01:51, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure. I think I wrote the 2.3 based on an online source. But I suspect there are conflicting, and no authoritative, figures. --Stbalbach 03:55, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

i removed the catholic missionary link. it has NOTHING to do with the aymara.

I have updated the Aymara population numbers for the latest national censuses from Bolivia(2001), Peru(1993) and Chile(2002). Adding up the three countries yields a total of 1,951,167 which I rounded up to 2.0 million total speakers. It is probably higher today considering population growth, especially in Peru since 1993. I also deleted the part about Aymara living in Salta, Argentina, because I have been unable to find any reference to Aymara in Argentina, except for recent immigrants coming to Buenos Aires from Bolivia. I have checked the books of a number of experts in Andean linguistics (Cerron-Palomino, Adelmar, etc.) and none mention any Aymara in Salta, Argentina. There are, however, Quechua in Salta, Argentina and I think that someone has confused the Quechua with the Aymara. Amosbatto (talk) 05:39, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Name of article[edit]

The name of the article, "Aymara ethnic group", seems kind of redundant. Wouldn't "Aymara people" or just plain "Aymara" be sufficient? --ざくら木 11:22, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Move to Aymara, as per User:Bedivere. Many Indigenous names are already plural and adding an "s" doesn't clarify anything. The Spanish-language Wikipedia prefers "Foos" as a standard for "Foo" ethnic group, but the standard for Indigenous peoples of the Americas in the English-language Wikipedia is either "Foo" or "Foo people", when the primary topic is contested.   • Oppose While I would concur with "Aymara" (and not "Aymaras") as the proper plural, "Aymara" is a disambiguation page, which includes entries like Aymaran languages, Aymaraes Province, etc. Under the circumstances, "Aymara people" is necessary.
