unknown[edit]

I would like to question the naming of species in the Mandarin squares. I believe the article is based on out-of-date information.

The Asian flycatcher is now usually placed in the genus Terpsiphone and is no longer called Tchitrea Incei.

The Eastern egret, Egretta modesta, appears to be known as Egretta alba modesta, i.e., modesta is a subspecies of alba.

The Silver pheasant is known as Lophura nycthemera and not Gallophasis nyethemerus.

The oriole (for musicians) is identified on this page as the Golden oriole and a link provided to the article on the Golden oriole (Oriolus oriolus). Although the Golden oriole is found in relatively remote parts of China, isn't it likely that the oriole being referred to is Oriolus chinensis, the Black-naped oriole? Could someone confirm this?

Your info is most probably right. I got my info from a century-old dictionary by Herbert Giles. It could indeed use some updates. Be bold! --Menchi 09:28, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

In support of my point on the Oriole, you will find that the Chinese words 黄鹂,黄莺, and 仓庚 all appear to refer to Oriolus chinensis, not Oriolus oriolus.

Korea section needs rewrite[edit]

The "Korea" section needs some help from someone who is knowledgeable about the subject. I already removed the adjective "...yet beautifully executed...", which has no place in an encyclopedia, but what remains is problematic since it appears to be describing one single example of a Joseon embroidered panel, in that "...it shows a pair of black and white leopards, one above the other in opposing stance, surrounded by stylised cloud patterns in pink, purple and pale green upon a blue background." Since that is the only example cited, it makes it seem as if all of them are identical, which they weren't. So perhaps more information could be added about other examples, and it can be clarified that the example cited may be considered typical, it is by no means uniform.
