Fails to discuss outstanding Canadian football quarterback. Should there be a disambiguation page, or how should this be dealt with? --Daniel C. Boyer 12:46, 1 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Disambiguation[edit]

It seems to me that the actor is far more notable than either the Canadian quarterback or the English football (soccer) player. The vast majority of the links pointing to Tom Wilkinson are about the actor (see [1]). I propose moving this page back to Tom Wilkinson, with the current hatnote serving the disambiguation function. Anyone object? —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 06:12, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Age of his children[edit]

So are they permanently the ages stated here, or can someone provide a DoB for each?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.189.162.144 (talk) 02:06, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've gone ahead and listed the birth years of his daughters with a source (my comment in the section below on this talk page includes additional sources about his daughters too). I also removed the claim that they still live with him because the sources for that claim were so old and because of their current ages (early 30s/late 20s) suggest that may not still be true. Date of Marriage[edit]

The year listed here for the actor's marriage appears to be incorrect. It is listed as the year 1998, and according to another information site, it should be 1988.69.144.232.140 (talk) 17:13, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's 1998. All Hallow's Wraith (talk) 08:00, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What's your source for that information? I've found each of those dates mentioned on multiple sites, most of them unsourced. In some cases, both dates have been listed on the same site! I'm more inclined to trust the earlier date, based on two bits of information -- this Guardian article says "in his early 40s, soon after his marriage to Diana Hardcastle," and this website (even though the title says 1998) quotes an anonymous "insider" stating that their 30th anniversary is in 2018. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.160.237.28 (talk) 18:06, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The 1998 listing is a typo from the 2008 Guardian article currently used as a source. The other citation for 1998 is from familysearch.org, which is behind a paywall and which is a genealogy website that overwhelmingly consists of user-generated content without even the safeguards of user-generated Wikipedia (i.e. it’s likely that absolutely anyone could have posted the year 1998). Unfortunately, having the wrong date listed on Wikipedia and one Guardian article have insured that some other websites also have used the wrong date.
There is much more evidence in favor of 1988, however. One is the website for the highly reliable Encyclopaedia Britannica, which says his marriage is from “1988-present”: https://www.britannica.com/facts/Tom-Wilkinson . Plus, the Guardian article you listed cancels out the the Guardian article cited for 1998 (or rather betters it, since it doesn't look like something that could be an easy typo). The popular international news site Deutsche Welle has an article on their Spanish site that mentions Wilkinson and his 1988 marriage: “Casado desde 1988 con la actriz Diana Hardcastle, con quien tiene dos hijas…” (My translation: “Married since 1988 with the actress Diana Hardcastle, with whom he has two daughters…”; https://www.dw.com/es/bardem-serio-candidato-al-oscar-para-españa/a-3138460).
There is also the Mexican newspaper Vanguardía that lists 1988 in an article about the actor’s 70th birthday: https://vanguardia.com.mx/articulo/tom-wilkinson-cumple-70-anos. It says in Spanish: “celebra al lado de su esposa Diana Hardcastle, también actriz, con quien se casó en 1988 y tiene dos hijas: Alice (1989) y Mollie (1992)” (My translation: “He is celebrating [his birthday] at the side of his wife, Diana Hardcastle, also an actor, whom he married in 1988 and with whom he has two daughters: Alice (1989) and Mollie (1992)”). The German version of the popular European celebrity magazine Gala also lists 1988: https://www.gala.de/stars/starportraets/tom-wilkinson-21361872.html (“verheiratet seit 1988”; “married since 1988”). The Spanish-language weekly entertainment magazine ¡Hola! also says 1988: https://us.hola.com/cine/2008012937141/cine/oscar/actorreparto4/ (“Casado desde 1988 con Diana Hardcastle, la pareja tiene dos hijas, Alice, nacida en 1989 y Molly, nacida en 1992”; My translation: “Married since 1988 to Diana Hardcastle, the pair have two daughters, Alice, born in 1989 and Molly, born in 1992.”)
The IMDb lists 5 January 1988 in the articles for both Wilkinson and Diana Harcastle. NNDB tends to get this sort of personal information correct, and it also list his marriage date as 5 Jan. 1988: https://www.nndb.com/people/774/000107453/ . The large-scale German website on movies Kino.de lists 1988 in its biographical article on Wilkinson: https://www.kino.de/star/tom-wilkinson/ (“Wilkinson ist seit 1988 mit der Theaterschauspielerin Diana Hardcastle verheiratet”; my translation: “Wilkinson has been married to theatrical actress Diana Hardcastle since 1988”). A prominent Swiss book seller also has an article about Wilkinson that says 1988: https://www.weltbild.ch/biografie/tom-wilkinson_8357773 (in German).
And there are numerous websites and some foreign-language Wikipedia pages on Wilkinson that list his marriage year as 1988. For example, one (https://www.whosdatedwho.com/dating/tom-wilkinson-and-diana-hardcastle) not only lists his marriage date as “5th Jan 1988,” but also includes the extra information that prior to their marriage: “They were dating for 1 year after getting together in 1987.”
His oldest daughter was born in 1989, which also makes 1988 as the more likely year for his wedding (although that is of course not proof, as some—although certainly not many—people do marry years after having their children together). There is simply no question that there is far more and far more reliable evidence for 1988 than 1998, and that is what should be listed here on Wikipedia. Because of these things (and more I didn’t get around to), I will go ahead and correct the date for the article. Rmm413 (talk) 15:20, 13 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Checking the BMD register on findmypast.co.uk (which is based on the actual records and is not user generated like familysearch) I have discovered the marriage of a Thomas Wilkinson to a Diana Hardcastle registered in Westminster in 1998. So it would appear 1988 is a misnomer that has been spread around the internet until it's everywhere and no-one knows what the original source was. Unfortunate. Based on this and the fact that 1988 isn't actually properly sourced, I will change the date to 1998. My other suggestion is we remove the year altogether until a reliable source for the correct date can be used. Crisso (talk) 13:27, 1 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I decided on my other suggestion and have removed any reference to the date of marriage from the article and that of Diana Hardcastle. Prior to my previous comment I hadn't actually seen that the date was sourced within the article as I was only looking at the date in the infobox, however I do think a lot of those sources and ones discussed above are questionable (I don't think nndb has ever been considered reliable by WP standards) as it looks like they've just plucked their info from the likes of IMDb and other similar internet sites rather than actually doing any deep research. So I maintain that we should leave the date off for now. Crisso (talk) 14:02, 1 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Uncreditted TV Work.[edit]

Tom Wilkinson also starred as the eponymous Detective Inspector Charlie Resnick on British TV series 'Resnick' in the 1990s.

This isn't mentioned in his credits on this site. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.38.75.184 (talk) 05:38, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The articles states he was member of OBE, therefor he should be added to Category:Members of the Order of the British Empire if I am correct. XXLVenom999 (talk) 22:43, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
