Untitled[edit]

I thought of making articles on all the great monks of RKM order without the prefix swami. This is to remove the ambiguity, as happened in case of Swami Ghanananda of Ghana and Swami Ghanananda of RKM. However there are 2 articles, one on Prabhavananda which was there before, and one more created by me earlier on Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda. Ramashray

Belur Math I have added one sentence only to bring the link to Belur Math.

Table format[edit]

I have made the data pertaining to Periodicals into Table Format for easy reading. The Journals published by Ramakrishna Mission from various centres are given year-wise. Wherever available, links for the Website of the respective centres are also provided. VMO 13:33, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

History[edit]

This article desperately needs an expanded History section. Currently it appears as if the only history of the Mission is a lawsuit, which of course is only a minor detail in the history. There is a book called something like "History of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission," although I don't have access to that book at the momemt. HeBhagawan 03:27, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the lawsuit fact is indeed a minor one and featuring it as the very second para seems to give it undue importance in the long history of the organisation. Why can't we just title it as "Minority claim" and place it after the "See also" para so that History para can be suitably expanded in due course. — VMO 05:31, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How about placing it near the bottom of the article in a new section called "controversies?" Many articles have such a section? HeBhagawan 14:16, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. — VMO 14:21, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Belur Math not Calcutta[edit]

For accuracy sake: the HQ is located in Belur of District Howrah across the Ganga river and not in Kolkata though nearer to it. — VMO 15:30, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Names of Monks[edit]

Perhaps some consensus could be formed about naming of monks. Many articles are given with the prefix "Swami" (including Swami Vivekananda); many others are given without. It looks like a lot of work to fix all the entries, either way. I would be slightly in favour of keeping the "Swami" prefix. After all, the monks are known that way to most people; their books carry their names that way too. Then again, giving only the "ananda" name has a certain alacrity. Britannica has an entry for "Vivekananda". I am not familiar with the Ghanananda controversy referred to by Ramashray. Sw.my 02:23, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the articles themselves refer to them by title. Ramashray (above) suggests that the Swami prefix may result in ambiguity in some cases. But I don't think that removing the Swami prefix from one monk is the right solution. If there are two monks called Swami Ghanananda, then it would be better to create a disambiguation page, and create two articles Swami Ghanananda (Ghana) and Swami Ghanananda (RKM) --RichardVeryard 09:42, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have now moved the African Swami to Swami Ghanananda (Ghana), and created the necessary disambiguation pages/links. --RichardVeryard 10:07, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Heads and Prominent Monks[edit]

I have created a category called Category:Monks of the Ramakrishna Mission. Presumably everyone associated with the Mission should be classified either here or in the Category:Heads of the Ramakrishna Mission. Where does Swami Vivekananda himself belong - does he not count as one of the heads of the mission? --RichardVeryard 09:08, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Usually Swami Brahmananda is called the first president of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. But Swami Vivekananda himself wrote that he had "resigned the presidentship". Which would make him actually the first president. The organization refers to its "head" as the President of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. I don't know if that should be reflected in the category "heads" (as, say, "Presidents of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission"). Sw.my 12:27, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Heads of the Ramakrishna Mission would belong also in Monks of the Ramakrishna Mission, since only Monks of the Mission would become head of it. Sw.my 09:10, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Merge Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission articles?[edit]

How do editors feel about merging the pages Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission into one page Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission? The two organizations are inextricably linked, and form, more or less, one unit, as it were. This would be more concise, and make the relation between the "twin organizations" clearer. Sw.my 09:14, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, its better to merge the two articles, into The Ramakrishna Math and MissionNvineeth talk 10:15, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Even the article Ramakrishna Order can be merged here. — Nvineeth talk 10:19, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it makes a lot of sense to have two articles ,as the two organisations have very clear differences in focus and membership. The two articles already interlink. One is for the monastic order. The other for lay people, though monks may be members. What purpose would be served by merging them?
--84.82.151.107 (talk) 19:48, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, as I understand it, the monks of the Ramakrishna Math are in full control of the Ramakrishna Mission, and the centres of the Ramakrishna Mission are all staffed primarily or exclusively by monks. Though the Mission has laypeople, it is for social service, and monks are in full control of it.
It is not clear to me (or, I bet, to most people) what exactly the difference between the two organizations is. One reason may be that the term "Ramakrishna Mission", in addition to referring specifically to the registered society that performs social service with monks and laypeople participating, is also widely used to refer to the Ramakrishna Order in general, and even to centres that belong to the Ramakrishna Math but not Mission. (For example, we have categories, "Monks of the Ramakrishna Mission", "Heads of the Ramakrishna Mission", though that could be better named "Monks of the Ramakrishna Math" etc.) I don't know whether every monk of the Math is also a monk of the Mission? It seems so. So merging the articles would put everything in one place. Devadaru (talk) 18:28, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The distinction between the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission is simple - the Math is aligned towards promoting the religious and spiritual principles while the Mission is committed towards social service such as medical, education and relief work. The management of the two seemingly distinct organizations are essentially the same. Even the posts are named like "President of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission". So it makes a lot of sense to have the two articles merged, with one paragraph providing the above mentioned difference between the goals of the two organizations.
