Name[edit]

Who the hell thinks it's pronounced "Bone-er"? I've never heard that, and I'm inclined to think it's someone having a laugh, especially as nowhere else has he ever been called "Packie Boner". But if anyone can prove otherwise, then please do. Dan Kerins 01:09, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's pronounced "Bonn - er"

Having just listened to the interview linked to from this page, the interviewer says Bonn-er and Packie doesn't correct him on it - but does correct him on where he was born! That's good enough for me. Dan Kerins 12:25, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well that's not good enough for me. For years I watched Packie on the telly playing for Ireland and for Celtic. I have lived in Ireland all my life and I have never, ever, EVER heard anyone call him bone - ur. It's a bit of a wind up my friend and you've been taken in! I'll continue to change it back to the correct way if you decide to change it.

You've completely missed my point - I'm agreeing with you, whoever you are. (Don't forget to sign your posts). I'm the person who first mentioned that "Bone-er" was the result of someone having a wind-up. Dan Kerins 17:12, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is pronounced "Bone-er". I'm from Keadue where he went to school, that's what everyone calls him. It was my grandmother's maiden name, is quite common around our area, The Rosses. The only time I've ever heard the name pronounced "Bonn-er" is by people on TV who aren't from the area. Packie probably never corrected the interviewer because it's not that big of a deal. Players like Patrick Vieira (pronounced Vi-er-AH, not Vi-EH-rah), Paulo Wanchope (pronounced Wan-chop-AY not WAN-chop) had their names pronounced all the time when they played in England but they just accepted it. Signing for Celtic[edit]

Does anyone know if he definitely signed from Leicester or Keadue Rovers? I've read conflicting reports... SeanMack 16:29, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Keadue's site (shield your eyes! the horrors!) says he signed from them. --62.77.181.1 01:04, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Time-wasting in World Cup 1990[edit]

Perhaps it should be mentioned that his action in the World Cup 1990 ("he kept the ball for over 6 minutes against Egypt, by dribbling it around his box and picking it up again") is the reason why the rule that prohibits the goalkeeper from handling the ball again once he has released it for play was created. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.216.104.83 (talk) 14:48, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That never happened. Ian Cheese (talk) 19:46, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
