I agree that the Dante reference is excellent, but it's really about bungs, not bungholes. I've moved it to the bung article. As a consolation for losing such a nifty reference, I've added a memorable passage from Shakespeare's Hamlet that actually mentions "bunghole" and implies its meaning from the context. — Jeff Q 01:55, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Oops! After reading the actual Dante text, I realized that his use of bung was identical to the slang use of bunghole, so I restored the citation. To make this clear, I added the specific quote. I also restructured the subsequent text to provide a chronological flow of the slang citations, ending with the Beavis and Butt-head use. — Jeff Q 02:19, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Does this article need a reference to the slang usage past the disambiguation link at the top? maxdamage 20:21, 17 Jul 2007 (EST)

References tag[edit]

This article has had a references tag for over two years despite (1) a reference being as easy to come by as a glance at the nearest dictionary (2) people adding quotations from both Hamlet and Dante's Inferno and presumably consulting referenced texts while adding them. Surely it can't be that difficult to come up with references. If no one has done it seven days from now I'll spend the 30 seconds it'll take to do it myself.
