Untitled[edit]

"Lister gave birth to the twins himself after a sexual liaison with his female alter-ego from a female-orientated alternate universe. Due to them being born in a different reality to their conception both of them grew to be eighteen years old within three days, so in order to make sure they didn't die within a fortnight Lister sent them back to their mother's dimension."

This is in the article, but I can't recall Lister giving birth. Rimmer tells him that he is pregnant at the end of the episode, and then the pregnancy is never mentioned again as far as I know. Can anyone clear this up?

-- At the End of Episode Future Echoes, which precedes the Parallel Universe, Lister takes a picture of himself with two babies. At this point the assumption is that they have a mother, but the bit you're describing confirms that, actually, he gave birth to them. Andymarczak 15:18, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

-- At the start of series 3 there are some paragraphs of scrolling text which explains that Lister gave birth to twin boys; Jim and Bexley and that they were returned to their mother in the alternate reality Pastbury 00:11, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"At the beginning of series 3, we learn that Kryten smashed the bike into an asteroid. Lister rebuilt him, but was unable to recreate him exactly"

Also, I can not recall this ever being mentioned at the beginning of series 3! Any help?

These details are all mentioned - very quickly - at the beginning of series 3, in a Star Wars-like scrolling text thing that goes so fast that you need a video player with a good pause function to actually read it. --Paul A 08:19, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Do we really need a spoiler warning for each section? Wouldn't just one warning at the start cover everything? --Daibhid C 17:27, 12 March 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm splitting the six major characters out of this page into pages of their own since their sections are all rather significant and the page is pretty long with it all in here. I can't find any discussion from when they were all merged together so I'm hoping this isn't a matter that's been hashed out in detail already. There's some useful guidelines over on Wikipedia:Fiction that I think apply here. Bryan 22:18, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Tony, I just re-reverted your reversion of my changes - it was easier than not doing it since we edit-conflicted while I was trimming down the sections of the six main characters I was splitting off. Sorry about that. However, I'm a little puzzled why you reverted me in the first place since you said in the edit summary "I think you could be right". Do you think the TOC and spoiler warning changes were a bad idea, or not? I'm not deeply wedded to one or the other, I'm mainly just confused at this point. Bryan 22:35, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'll go through the redirects to make sure they're straightened out too once I'm sure the changes I made are accepted enough to be stable. Bryan 22:51, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Although Arnold J. Rimmer would like people to think he is a Bachelor of Science (BSc), he actually only holds a Bronze Swimming Certificate (BSC). The capitalisation is important in this case. The fact he cheated at even this lowly "award" and actually cannot swim is a testament to the depths this man will sink to (perhaps literally). -=# Amos E Wolfe #=- 21:31, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)

  • I'm not sure he cheated. The only time he's called a non-swimmer is by Andy the twonk in Back To Reality, which was a hallucination designed to bring down their morale. Jess Cully 00:43, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Correct spelling of brufweno/brufwino? Also, with regards to Kochanski as Lister's ex-girlfriend vs. object of affection, which seems to have been recently changed, the Red Dwarf site states:
`and the rather bizarre fact that Lister is his own father (with his ex-girlfriend Kochanski emerging as his Mom)...`
Later episodes confirm this, although earlier episodes claim he never had the courage to ask her out. wht.rbt 13:53, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

-- What you are describing here is the joy of the Red Dwarf Continuity Debate. There are whole websites devoted to the lack of continuity in certain areas, including some which I have added on to the main article. My advice is either relate it to Continuity, or just let it go Andymarczak 15:18, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alternate personalities[edit]

I've moved Queeg to the Alter egos section, as he wasn't really a shipboard robot, merely Holly in disguise. 17:27, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Captain Hollister[edit]

Is his first name ever given as Frank? Most sources I've seen just call him Captain Hollister and I don't remember him being referred to as Frank at any time in the series. One site even lists him as "Captain (Dennis?) Hollister" as that's the only first name we hear him given. Jess Cully 00:41, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Back in the Red Part 3
HOLLISTER Well, for me, Lister's nanobots story is corroborated. They were trying to track 'em down. Their actions in the psychotropically induced scenario bear that out.

HOLLY I agree Frank. I also believe we died, and were, indeed, resurrected.

Andymarczak 11:08, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He also refers to himself as 'Captain F. Hollister' in that story. However, Hollister might not actually be his real name at all, as he was formerly known as 'Dennis the Doughnut Boy' (although that was a one-off gag and might not be canon). RobbieG 21:32, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dennis the Donut Boy -- Which episode is this mentioned in? I vaguely remember seeing when I first saw the episodes on tv, but I just rewatched season eight and I didn't see that this time around. Which episode is this from? 66.159.253.60 09:40, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is from Back In The Red. It's part of a Monologue to camera by Hollister, I think as a catch up in between episodes. Andymarczak 06:38, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Todhunter[edit]

The article says "Todhunter's job title is never explained, though he may be the first officer (executive officer) of Red Dwarf. He is in charge of the stasis booth and tries to describe how it works to anyone who goes there. He is also an exam invigilator." A later episode in series 3 explains that a woman called Carol Brown is the ship's executive officer. It is more likely that Todhunter is the ship's Chief Engineer. I say this for two reasons 1) He is seen in The End holding a clipboard containing the "Engineer's Report" and 2) as the article points out he is seen invigilating the Engineer's exam. Pastbury 00:17, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not to mention that being an engineer, he would know about stasis fields. 72.45.107.156 (talk) 05:57, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Scutters do not beleive in silicon heaven to keep the costs down. They find the concept ridiculous"[edit]

Where is the reference to this? I do not recall any episode of red dwarf where silicon heaven and the scutters are mentioned together. Was it in one of the books? 80.37.21.9 18:06, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it's in one of the books. JamesCollins (talk) 22:56, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was mentioned in the book, Better Than Life. It's also worth noting that Talkie Toaster doesn't believe in Silicon Heaven either. - Mastertechnician (talk) 11:39, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:RedDwarfCast.jpg[edit]

Image:RedDwarfCast.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Wording of Characters seems wrong[edit]

I have just been through and fixed up some of the sentences in the Character descriptions. I have a problem though in seeing how little information there is for the main characters, but how much there is for the one time/ uncommon characters in the show. Maybe someone with some time on there hands can go through and try to correct this. Also try and make it so each Character description flows in the same way to each other. --MattyC3350 (talk) 10:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As soon as the main article Red Dwarf is brought up to scratch for re-assessment I'll be back to have a look. --Nreive (talk) 14:18, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Umm... the main characters should only have a short description on this page, since they are notable enough to have their own articles, though I do agree the descriptions could use some work. 72.45.107.156 (talk) 05:56, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"The skutters are .... particularly well designed for giving 'up yours' ... most often to Rimmer whom they strongly dislike"[edit]

This is unfair. There is a considerable amount of evidence that some of the skutters get along with Rimmer better than he does with other people. It should be noted that skutters take part in Hammond Organ Recital Night and were also seen to go an a week long hike with Rimmer as a holiday. --Hrimpurstala (talk) 01:06, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They did indeed go on a hiking holiday and all but in an episode in te first series when lister considers being frozen in the stasis booth again the scutters leave lister a note "please dont go into stasis, dont leave us with rimmer" then they bash their heads on the wall. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.68.79.6 (talk) 23:49, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It could be stated that there are more than just a couple of skutters on Red Dwarf. The books allude to there being thousands on board. Some are possibly tolerant of Rimmer, while others are not so.

Guest stars[edit]

Surely Adolf Hitler deserves a mention for his credited cameo in Timeslides. - Mastertechnician (talk) 11:41, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The mention of "Adolf Hitler as Himself" is the credits of the episode is merely intended to be a joke. Archive footage doesn't usually count as a guest star credit. magnius (talk) 13:24, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Katerina Bartikovsky a hallucination[edit]

It is very clear in the specials that Katerina Bartikovsky is merely a part of the group hallucination that the crew shared. She appeared after they were attacked by the squid, and everything that she did, inclusing the opening of the portal etc..was all a part of the shared hallucination. This is even mentioned within the episode itself, rewatch the final part and listen closely near the end for proof of this. magnius (talk) 10:27, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I shall but, in the meantime, tell us what your proof is. --Michael C. Price talk 10:33, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not disputing whether she was a hallucination. I'm disputing the fact that she appeared in Back to Reality. Back to Reality was the season 5 episode, which introduced the concept of a despair squid. Katerina did not appear in that episode. -- WORMMЯOW  12:19, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think we're all agreed that she doesn't appear in Back to Reality, which the original wording implied. The end of the series implies that, although the return to Earth was originally an hallucination, it now exists as a consequence of their observation. (And how can a car crash kill a hard light hologram?)--Michael C. Price talk 14:20, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Katerina was a hallucination, as Rimmer says the hallucination is the reality beginning "after Kremlin Kate showed up". Though she does exist in the alternate universe created by the dream, but that does not make her real. By the way, the implication is that every dream and hallucination creates a reality, so the Back to Reality scenario or even Cat's Tongue Tied dream exist as alternate realities in the Red Dwarf canon (not to mention the dream that Cat was actually looking for in the dream recorder). I agree with your point about hard-light and car crashes, since Legion said they are "practically indestructible". Though "Back to Earth, Part Two" never says she died, she could have just been sent away. At any rate, this is not of Wikipedia importance. The wording should reflect that Katerina was created by the second Despair Squid encounter and not the one in Series V, since this seems to be causing some confusion. I hope this has helped clear this up. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.45.107.156 (talk) 05:54, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
