Nothing about the sex abuse claims?[edit]

Several lawsuits are now ongoing regarding sexual abuse of children in the program, particularly from the Navajo Nation. For example, http://fox13now.com/2016/03/24/lds-church-named-in-lawsuit-alleging-sexual-abuse-of-navajo-children-in-foster-program/ reports on a recent case. 208.163.133.252 (talk) 18:28, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I added a new section on it today. Mang (talk) 18:21, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dates are too broad[edit]

It says "1947-2000." We all know this program didn't have legs until the 60s and lost its legs in the 70s. Yes, there was an informal program with ONE student in 1947, and it sounds like Spencer W Kimball, in keeping with his penchant for all things Native American, was already keeping an eye on that one student, but it didn't become a program until 1954. The program eventually peaked in '72 with ~5000 students, then began its decline because of both nativist political pressure and the increasing quality of reservation schools. Ironically, it may have been the US government's investigation and subsequent blessing in 1977 that made it socially unpopular and sealed its fate. All I'm saying is that it was a real bell curve, and casually saying it was a thing when it was 3 deviations above or below its mean is a little generous. That's like saying the abacus was in use from 6,000 BC to 2016. I mean, I guess so. But more appropriate than the current wording would be a line like "Although the program became official in 1954 and some students remained even up until the mid 1990s, the vast bulk of students participating were in the 1960s and 70s."
