I think that this article should be merged, while it is not exactly underneath the rule requirements for the game of life, it is clearly very similar, and uses the same principles.

Merging this article might be appropriate, but why merge with Conway's Game of Life? This article is not about Conway's Game of Life. Eric119 02:31, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

variations

I'm no expert, but this is how I understand it: At the very top of the heirarchy is CELLULAR AUTOMATA. Under Cell.A. is [ game of life and variants ] and [ things that are not very similar to game of life ]. I think that variants of the game of life that are not the game of life should have thier own article.

Currently, only a few variants have articles. I don't think there are enough yet to do a big merge. If we get a lot more, and they're all stubs, a merge into a separate page would certainly be appropriate. (I think HighLife should have its own article though.) Eric119 03:56, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

Every variant deserves its own article if enough information exists. THere is no need to merge them because they can all be considered subsets of Cellular Automata. As soon as enough information presents itself, even the more minor variants can be given full articles. BobbyG

If you'd made the diagonal line 512 units long instead of 511, it would stabilize once it finishes filling the square with a Sierpinski triangle of oscillators. Cute. Unfortunately I'm not sure how to mention it on the page without violating WP:OR. —David Eppstein 03:27, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

I made it 511 so people would know that not all diagonal lines stablize. Anyway I made the line 1024 units long now so it forms two larger sierpinskis.

Linking to Brian's Brain

I see that somebody's edit to add the link to the CA Brian's Brain here has been reverted. Since I was just about to do the same thing when I came here, here are the similarities:

• The same person Brian Silverman invented both cellular automata.
• The birth rule is the same. The only difference is that an on cell, instead of instantly vanishing, becomes a dying cell that then becomes off. Dying cells can't become on cells.

Disambiguation, Redirects, and Hats

I disagree with the removal of the hat. The guide that is quoted is not applicable. I find it bizarre that the primary page for seeds should redirect to an obscure topic when the common use of the word is plant material. In fact that is exactly what is happening - people are ending up here and not knowing how to find what they are looking for in a link. Yes, Seeds was changed in July to redirect here rather than to Seed. I think that was a mistake — Seed is clearly the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for that title. I changed it back after realizing that was the reason for trying to add the hatnote. —David Eppstein (talk) 18:03, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
