Hi. this is my user talk about wiki technicalities: "do"s and "don't"s, from netiquette to browser problems.


\phi vs. \varphi[edit]

I have a problem with all special characters (and greek symbols) in my browser (Mozilla), of course not latex "images", but HTML entities (problem probably discussed elsewhere, but didn't find it), but: If I put it in italics, they come out nicely! This is especially true for \phi, which becomes a very nice \varphi (while in roman, it's a nasty huge boldface "F"!)... (MFH forgot to sign).

I have no such problem. It could be something wrong with your fonts. I don't know what to say. See if it looks better in a different browser. Oleg Alexandrov 02:26, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks again for following my traces and deleting spaces I leave on beginning of lines and so. (How do you to to track my "contributions" (I put quotes because maybe its not always an enrichment...))

To track somebody's contributions: go to page history, take a diff involving the desired person, then you will see a link to contributions of that person. But (I think!) in this case it was easier, I think I either had that page on my watchlist, or I followed it from another page on the watchlist. So relax, I am not spying on you :)
Yes on a given page... which is on your watchlist.... but how did you find find pages I created initially? Some admin tool?

I didn't know that one can "grow up" in 3 days only. Even what Wikipedia is concerned. In what real life is concerned, I might be more grown up as you (I don't know). (Even if my web talk doesn't suggest this...) MFH 20:20, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Just add your comments at the end of the page, by starting a new section if necessary. I find this to be the simplest thing to do, and also more practical. Oleg Alexandrov 21:06, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)

New subject[edit]

To add a new subject, click on "edit" just above this line. Then, in the editor window, insert the new subject before this section (this here should always remain the last section of this page), as follows:

  • duplicate the title (line surrounded by '=='),
  • edit the first copy of the title to reflect the new subject, (i.e. your message will be at the top of the editor window!)
  • add your message before the title of this section ("New subject"). Thanks !

mollifiers[edit]

I'm not sure whether the plurally-titled mollifiers already existed at the time when I changed the link, but of course the solution is to move the article with the incorrect title to the singular mollifier (I have now done this). I was rather annoyed to see a new article with the incorrect plural title generalized functions when there was already a page titled generalized function. At that time the latter redirected to distribution; I've now moved the former. Michael Hardy 21:50, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)

IP numbers[edit]

Concerning your comment on my user page: You're absolutely right: the IP numbers are unreadable. I'm just having my fun; don't mind me.

Finally, note that my user page asks that visitors comment on my talk page, not on my user page itself. There's no rule saying you have to obey that request, though.msh210 14:24, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the detailed account. I know quite a bit about IP numbers and (HTML) character encoding. But I checked the source and saw you produce it by some /IP "macro"(?) I didn't know, and I guessed that this (suppposed) macro was buggy.
And, sorry for editing your user page, I didn't notice the word about. I saw you've already cleaned up a bit. Depending on your traffic, I guess I'm not the first to remark, so maybe you should leave a tiny link to kind of this discussion to avoid such overhead... MFH 19:04, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

sending messages to users[edit]

Q: Is it the normal way to "send messages" to somebody, by editing his "User talk" page? Should I now leave your message (I mean, the default "Welcome" stuff) on top of my user talk page?

Yes, if I want to write something to you, I use your "User talk" page. That's how it works here. You do not need to keep my welcome message, but it has helpful things for you to read, so I would say, don't delete it yet.
OK. But how can I organize it better? It's almost my first "active" day and it is already almost too long to overview! I think I still have lots of thinks to learn on wiki... (in spite of the remark below...) MFH

Q2: adding a "post" (sorry for the maybe improper vocabulary) to a "User talk" or "Discussion" page, should it be marked "minor edit" or not ? MFH 16:59, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Does not matter. What matters, is to put an edit summary. That edit summary functions like the Subject line of an email, it informs others what you are up to when you post something, or make a certain change to an article.
