Wikipedia:Requests for comment/220.233.86.223

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have been deeply disturbed by this user's actions regarding the editing of Potter's House Christian Fellowship.

For all details of this argument, go to: Talk:Potter's House Christian Fellowship

The situation goes like this:

  1. A few days ago, I noticed that very pov edits were being made on the article. Links to sites critical of the church were removed, along with any critical information in the actual text. Moreover, all the additions to the text were written in a substandard way and were exceptionally biased.
  2. After reverting a few times, and then having the articles reverted back, I began a talk page to try to settle the dispute. If you go to the user page you will see what I said.
  3. The contributor 220.233.86.223 made it clear that he would be happy to work with me on the text, but that this might not be possible because of my history of being critical of Pentecostalism generally.
  4. One of the things that 220.233.86.223 asked for was to post additional text in the discussion page before posting it on the article. Since this is not how wikipedia is edited, I simply stated that I would not be doing it that way.
  5. I then posted additional information to the page. I think I did a fair job in having a decent introduction and also inserted text that discussed some of the church's historical problems, including hundreds of churches leaving in 2001 and the setting up of websites critical of the church by former members who had been hurt by it. If you go to the history page for the article, my re-working of the text can be found at 21:40, 3 March 2005 (the one immediately preceeding the reversion by 220.233.86.223).
  6. Obviously 220.233.86.223 reverted it. He states in the comments line Revert - after anti-bias from Salient agan!! - please refrain Neil. In the discussion page he also states (Anti pottershouse campainer Neil McKenzie Cameron established.)
  7. Now all of this would have led me to go immediately to Wikipedia:Mediation but for one important problem: USER 220.233.86.223 REVEALS MY FULL NAME, ADDRESS, EMAIL, PHONE NUMBER AND CHURCH THAT I ATTEND for the reason of "exposing" me as an "adversary to the potters House Church and Pentecostelism (sic)".
Please note that Tim Starling modified the revision to remove this information. It is no longer in the history. However, the info can be found in various places (I've found it in one place already). - Ta bu shi da yu 14:24, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)
  8. My user page DOES contain my full name and which church I attend. There is no place on the internet, though, that can be freely accessed to show my address, email and phone number. I do not know how this person has gotten this private information.
  9. My feeling is that this particular user, who in the discussion page seems to indicate that he "knows" me, is deeply embedded in this particular church (The Potter's house). He honestly believes that I am opposed to Pentecostalism. While it is true that I have problems with the Pentecostal faith, I do not reject these people as fellow Christians. For evidence of this, please look at User talk:One Salient Oversight/ - theological dialogue with 5727sbj where I engage in robust intellectual debate with a Pentecostal over issues such as healing, and where we both have ended up respecting one another despite our differences.
  10. The fact that this person has revealed personal information about myself is very, very disturbing to me. I am seriously considering going to the Australian Police for help in this area.

Can SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME?

Note: User:Truth Over Relationship blanked this page and replaced it with his own comment, which I paste below:

Stop Bleeting Salient - you yourself said that anyone can type anything and wikipedia says "If you do not want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, do not submit it."
I have tried to get you to do an article with presentation of facts but - yuo just want to keep slandering - and as I believe that is an unlawfull thing to do.
So I must ask you to cease and desist from unsubstantiated slander against church groups - you have been warned!
As you know your personal info is freely available on the internet and subpheona to answer charges of Slander may one day find its way to your house.
I will not use your real name here again - however I think you should probably be thinking before bragging next time - I have marked you and will look at other attacks on the internat against church groups and if any come from you after todays date - I will follow through with litigation!
Again stop Slandering - use of Fact is Paramount (hearsay is dangerous)

Note from Ta bu shi da yu to above comment by Truth Over Relationship[edit]

I have a few comments here. Firstly, this is not a valid RFC. There is a template that must be used - see the main RFC page again. No matter how bizarre the behaviour of the user, this RFC must be lodged correctly. However, that said: I am seriously considering permanently blocking this user for making extremely intimidating threats. I will not accept this sort of behaviour on Wikipedia, and I think I speak for all administrators when I say this. The user User:Truth Over Relationship is under notice that if they a stunt like that again I will stop them from contributing to Wikipedia. We don't need users who do things like this. - Ta bu shi da yu 07:25, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Template[edit]

TBSDY - can you point me to the direction of the template? I can't seem to find out how to do it properly. One Salient Oversight 09:47, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Example user. Also, this doesn't appear to be listed on Wikipedia:Requests for comment, under user disputes. - Ta bu shi da yu 13:05, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hello. In an action for alleged slander, you must show proof of special damage. That is, slander is not actionable without proof of special damage to your specific reputation. (see e.g. Barnett v Milner (1993) Aust Torts Rep 81-218).

In addition, when the allegedly defamatory material on the Internet was regarded as published - at the time and place where you downloaded it to your computer - you were bound by the terms of the Wikipedia:General disclaimer which charges that "None of the ... contributors ... can be responsible for the appearance of any ... libelous information...". This is likely to constitute consent at common law for the publication of the defamatory material.

The contributor in question may also be able to rely on the defences of truth and qualified privilege (the latter depends upon whether there is sufficient malice in law to destroy the occasion of qualified privilege, although this seems unlikely). Finally, the doctrine of fair reports may act to protect the user.

As you can see, any case for slander against this user is likely to fail. I suggest you stop making uninformed and hollow legal threats. - Mark 13:35, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I have fixed the links and spelling to User:Truth Over Relationship in several comments a bove as it was being consistently miscapitalised. I am not at all involved in this RFC otherwise.-gadfium 19:01, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

IP information[edit]

I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. The user of an anonymous IP such as 220.233.86.223 is generally known to their own ISP. If their ISP was legally compelled to do so for some reason (perhaps as a result of a subpoena), they could probably supply the identity of this user. You would have to supply the exact time and date that this IP was used for any activity you find objectionable, remembering to convert Wikipedia timestamps to your appropriate timezone. I have no idea if you have any legal standing to request any of the above, or if the user in question has done anything legally actionable by revealing your private information; only a lawyer could give such advice.
