Introduction[edit]

I'm not going to fill in much of this list to begin, allowing more a chance to participate. I'll add a few periodically as time allows. The big issues will be:

  1. collaboration among the various dialects of English to gets things into the right category;
  2. making the list as easy to modify and use as possible.

Formatting[edit]

I just experimented with using lines on the table. (Temporarily placed some words in the second section for comparison with the first.) The table is essentially as easy to read as the list with all the bolding and and italicization--and immensely simpler for contributors to make additions.

The simple dash and space after the pronunciation is clean, and the pronunciation need not be italicized as it will contain some cap letters, which makes it stand off fine. --NathanHawking 02:03, 2004 Oct 30 (UTC)

OK, and all, but it seems to me like using X-SAMPA pushed this far enough into expert territory that worrying about a dash is trivial by comparison. -- Jmabel | Talk 06:58, Oct 30, 2004 (UTC)
Couldn't agree more on that, Joe. That SAMPA page is a monster, and I reverted that edit. I have a simplified guide to indicating American pronunciation well underway. --NathanHawking 10:06, 2004 Oct 30 (UTC)

'Discard' entry[edit]

Corrected the 'discard' entry to Merriam-Webster version. [1] If this at odds with your American pronunciation, we should go with the "standard" and not a dialect. If the "Common..." entry for 'discard' is different from the prescriptive UK form, by all means add it to the list in the appropriate category. --NathanHawking 03:53, 2004 Oct 30 (UTC)

X-SAMPA Pronunciation guide is overkill[edit]

Please note that one of the aims of the List of heteronyms stated on the talk page was to make the list easy to contribute to--but it should be no less easy to read. The X-SAMPA is VERY LARGE and not at all easy to use. It may be comprehensive and accurate, but it is SO overkill. I'm nearly finished with a guide which is far simpler and easy to use.

User:Poccil, please consult with other contributors before you make changes this fundamental to projects just underway. It is entirely possible the creators have a sense of direction for the project. --NathanHawking 07:14, 2004 Oct 30 (UTC)

Organization[edit]

Why on earth are we following a 'Simple guide to marking American pronunciation' in the 'common to most English dialects' section? Whatever we do, we should be writing pronunciations in a way that makes most sense internationally. -- Smjg 13:44, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Just what form would "makes most sense internationally" take? How would you structure this page to meet the conflicting issues you often bring up? --NathanHawking 19:04, 2004 Nov 1 (UTC)
