Name[edit]

"The Akkadians, the East Semitic-speaking people who later conquered the Sumerian city-states, gave Sumer its main historical name..." No, they didn't. It was 'stuck upon them' by professor J. Oppert.
Also "... the phonological development of the term šumerû is uncertain ..." Why is this discussed here? It's an Akkad word and as is it belongs there. They didn't call themselves 'sumer' either. Discuss the etymology of THEIR name.

Cradle of civilization[edit]

The 'cradle of civilization' term was invented by prof. S. Kramer when he said "Sumer, the cradle of civilization". I.e. not a generic term for Egypt and others in the middle east - as it is being distorted nowadays.

Weak proof of Connection with Indus Valley[edit]

On source # 24 there is a sentence which intends to be applied to the Sumerians, but it seems to be a weak argument as the study itself states: "Ancient DNA methodology was applied to analyse sequences extracted from freshly unearthed remains (teeth) of 4 individuals deeply deposited in slightly alkaline soil of the Tell Ashara (ancient Terqa) and Tell Masaikh (ancient Kar-Assurnasirpal) Syrian archaeological sites, both in the middle Euphrates valley. Dated to the period between 2.5 Kyrs BC and 0.5 Kyrs AD" . So it could be applied for any cultural group in that region.

Indeed, there is no genetic study regarding the people you call "Sumerians". The silence is deafening. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.70.29.185 (talk) 05:08, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
