Find correct name The airport is not listed as João Paulo II anywhere. The airport's own website calls itself simply Ponta Delgada, and has no mention of João Paulo.

Template:Regions of Portugal: statistical (NUTS3) subregions and intercommunal entities are confused; they are not the same in all regions, and should be sublisted separately in each region: intermunicipal entities are sometimes larger and split by subregions (e.g. the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon has two subregions), some intercommunal entities are containing only parts of subregions. All subregions should be listed explicitly and not assume they are only intermunicipal entities (which accessorily are not statistic subdivisions but real administrative entities, so they should be listed below, probably using a smaller font: we can safely eliminate the subgrouping by type of intermunicipal entity from this box).

Pact of Paris of 1922[edit]

Accuracy Tag[edit]

I added the accuracy tag because it was my understanding that "Duke of Braganza" has not invariably been the title of Portuguese heirs-apparent. My recollection is that in the 18th and early 19th centuries, the title of "Prince of Brazil" was often used, and that Duke of Braganza would be used for the son of the Prince of Brazil. But I am not exactly sure of this, so wanted to lay it out on talk. john k 19:38, 4 Dec 2004 (UTC)

As far as I remember, both titles were used by the Heir Presumptive and, where the heir also had an heir, the title of Duke of Bragança would pass to him. I.e. the Prince of Brazil would also be Duke of Brangança until the birth of his legitimate first-born male heir. The difference here is that the title of Duke of Bragança is, strictu sensu, independent from the Crown (i.e. it is a title which is held by the heir to the Crown by way of inheritance, whereas the title of Prince of Brazil was one inextricably linked to the Crown itself). These minor points are always better corrected. The tag has been used as a weapon by contentious and unscrupulous Users, so that many fastidious Wikipedians avoid it.--Wetman 16:12, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Guild of merchants[edit]

I am pretty sure that the guild of merchants is not a single guild of Portuguese merchants, but individual guilds: Lisbon merchants, Oporto merchants. I haven't changed the text, but someone should vet this. --Wetman 16:12, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Split?[edit]

Wasn't it good for this article to be spli into House of Braganza and Duke of Braganza?

Because the article seem to focus on the fact that they are Dukes and they only mention that they are in fact Kings of Portugal.

I found no confirmation in my sources (genealogy books) that the following ever received the duchy:

Queen Mary I of Portugal (Maria I, Duchess of Braganza) (1734-1816)

King Miguel of Portugal (Miguel I, Duke of Braganza) (1802-1866) (in exile after 1834)

Queen Maria II of Portugal (Maria II, Duchess of Braganza) (1819-1853)

(and, the count in the article lacked threev grabts which are attested in sources - thus the count arrives at identical number but through different list.)

Additionally, confirmation lacking (but not difficult to believe):

King Afonso VI of Portugal (Afonso II, Duke of Braganza) (1643-1653-1683)

King João V of Portugal (João III, Duke of Braganza) (1689-1750)

King Joseph I of Portugal (José I, Duke of Braganza) (1714-1777)

King João VI of Portugal (João IV, Duke of Braganza) (1767-1826)

King Pedro IV of Portugal (Pedro I, Duke of Braganza) (1798-1834)

19th King Pedro V of Portugal (Pedro II, Duke of Braganza) (1837-1861)

Peter II of Brazil[edit]

I really would like to see some reference that the last emperor of Brazil used the title of Duke of Braganza while in exile, for the last two years of his life. I could not find anyone. Could someone help me? Thanks! --Tonyjeff (talk) 01:03, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since nobody was able to find reference for the information cited above, after more than two years waiting for any response, I removed it, since I am quite sure that Peter II of Brazil never ever used such title (after 1889, he used to sign just "Pedro de Alcântara", with no title -- not even "dom"). --Tonyjeff (talk) 23:53, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Numbering[edit]

Did the Portuguese actually numbered the Dukes of Braganza or is it made up for Wikipeida?

A lot of Portuguese genealogy and nobility sites do indeed number the dukes, marquises, counts, barons, etc., although I have seen sources without numbering.
