First game in the series is more like Warlords, the importance of the starting hero can be turned off, along with some other things.
Second game (Wizard's Throne) is apparently more into Master of Magic, and third one (Shadow Magic, actually a stand-alone addon) reintroduces the "shadow land" of Master of Magic, though never reaching its complexity.
