Changing the direction of the article[edit]

I think that we should only have ethnic Russians in the article. 68.108.115.69 00:36, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What is ethnic Russian? Alexander Pushkin - a cross between Russian and Ethiopean people? Chingiz Aitmatov, a Kyrgiz? Nikolai Gogol, a Ukranian? Or Boris Pasternak - a Jew. It's their command of Russian language which makes all of them great Russian authors.

Russians with no Russians[edit]

I love it how in the beginning it used to give an exhaustive list of all nationalities that could be great Russians... except Russians themselves (until I fixed it). Making me think for a second there that every single person worth mentioning was anything but Russian. Props to whoever wrote that fine intro. Guinness man 11:37, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Intro can stay as long as the title matches what the intro intends. 141.211.251.69 01:09, 14 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Film-makers[edit]

Howbout film-makers? Are they "artists" or should have own section? I would include Andrei Tarkovsky, although I don't know any others. Astrophil 17:31, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Russians making an Impact[edit]

The "List of craters on the Moon" has a number of craters named after supposedly notable Russians. However I have been unable to find much information on these individuals. For the most part they are rocketry scientists and engineers, and the names were given to craters on the far side. These I have listed in italics w/o a link, because I'm not sure about the full name. If you could help work some of those out, it would be appreciated. Thank you! RJH 23:36, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Random thoughts[edit]

maybe we should consolidate "Scientists" and "Inventors"? seems redundant. kwertii

Maybe Inventors should be separate as most are engineers or tinkerers

Ah.. good point.

I like how Rasputin is in the "Other" category.. I sat here, looking through the categories, trying to pick one.. 'Royal Family'? no.. 'Politician'? no.. ummmm... 'Miscellaneous'. ;)

kwertii

Hey dear anonymous user 64.228.30.135 I can't help if Russian father's names do not fit in your frame or (others one) of editing but as it seems I have to repeat thousand times that we should write Russian names in full here. It is hard to find sometimes one Russian person if you do not know the full name. The same thing is if we should leave some French names and Jean-Claude Killy would simply become Jean Killy. So I have to revert back:

Nikolai Semenovich Leskov (1831 - 1895), storyteller, novelist, and journalist
Nikolai Platonovich Ogaryov (1813 - 1877), author

I guess there are quite many Leskovs and Ogaryov whose names are Nikolai and such. So please be accurate as possible you can. All others have contributed nice editings without ruining the meanings. Best regards and Happy New Year 2003. My trifle --XJamRastafire 01:44 Jan 1, 2003 (UTC)

Stalin[edit]

Joseph Stalin is listed as a famous Russian - but he wasn't a Russian, was he? I think he was from Georgia. Fisk 13:52 Mar 16, 2003 (UTC)

The convention for mentioning lifetimes for living is persons is thus : (born 1926) or just (b. 1926). If someone is not sure of the birth or death years of non-living persons, and he wishes to keep it open so that someone else can fill it up, he can write it as (1856 - ?). I have made the changes. Jay 18:25, Sep 14, 2003 (UTC)

Joseph (Iosif) Stalin was ethnically a Georgian, but Georgia united with Russian Empire in 1801, so all Georgians after that became "Russians" if you look at it from abroad. The most famous of these Georgian Russians was the Russian hero of the Napoleonic wars general Bagration (of Georgian royal line). But unlike these Georgian Russians, Joseph Stalin effectively became a Soviet man, though he had been born in Georgia, then a part of the Russian Empire. So, he is an ethnic Georgian, Russian by main language he used, and Soviet by his citizenship and his way of life.

To sum it up, your encyclopedia should include "politically incorrect" Soviet Empire (you choose the name) and, correspondingly, 'List of Soviet people'. Dec.8,2003. GNS

  • You don't understand. In Russian language we have 2 words - in etnicity context we spell "russkiy" (man) "ruskaya" (woman) or "russkie" (plural). But when we talking about citizenship, we spell "rossiyanin", "rossiyanka", "rossiyane" - people with sitizenship of Russian Federation/Empire and so on. It does not matter what is his real etnic group - chechenian, [russkiy], ukrainian, armenian, tartar and so on. The preamble of this article has no explanation and no differentiation of this moment. Of course, Kabaeva is a great Russian gymnast, but she is half of tartarian, not full-russkaya.--Oleg Abarnikov (talk) 14:08, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Artists[edit]

Under artists one has to add: 1.Ilya Yefimovitch Repin ( 1844-1930),certainly one of the moct well known painters 2.Ivan Ivanovitch Shiskin (1832-1898), certainly the best known landscape painter 3. Alexander Nikolayevich Benois (1870-1960),great painter and a leading figure in the world of art

I am also missing Malevitch, Kandinsky, Roerich,

Who is "famous"?[edit]

How is the degree of "famousness" determined. Alexey Pavlovich Okladnikov is a rather famous historian and ethnographer, however, he is famous among specialists only. Common people wouldn't normally know who he is. Should he be added into this list? If so, in which category? If not, what is the reasoning? Thanks. --Ezhiki 16:01, Apr 28, 2004 (UTC)

If an article is in wikipedia, then the person is here no question. If you watch the Wikipedia:Votes for deletion, you'd notice that pure vanity pages don't live long here. Mikkalai 02:51, 29 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Section hierarchy[edit]

I added some obvious hierarchy and some not so obvious. Two remarks:

  • Clearly, the sectioning may be of various structure. I'd suggest to use the rule of thumb: to split into subsections only of the list is reasonably long or if subsections are of significant meaning.
  • Statsmen: IMO the at the moment the only reasonable turning point is 1917. The history is pretty continuous (in terms of involvement of people) "before" and "after", and people would overlap any turning point. I understand that there is a strong desire to see the collapse of the Soviet Union as another watershed, but this time moment IMO will be difficult to use as a criterion, e.g., Yeltsin: before of after? Good title for list?[edit]

Is List of Russians really a good title for this list? I sounds kind-of ridiculous. I mean, we wouldn't have a List of Americans or anything. Why not List of famous Russians or List of notable Russians? blankfaze | &#9835 18:46, 25 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Let's take, say, List of rivers of Europe. Will you be saying that we must rename it to List of notable rivers of Europe as well? Mikkalai 20:08, 25 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Well NO, but rivers aren't people. List of Russians sounds like it should be a list of every single Russian person ever, notable or otherwise. blankfaze | &#9835 23:41, 27 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Well YES. Are you going to list every river and creek? We are not defining an exact term here. therefore tere is no need in an "exact" title. If someone thinks we are going to put all Russians here, let him tremble with fear. Adding the word "notable" may only add POV discussions: who is notable and who is not. Mikkalai 00:46, 28 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we've already had such a dispute. I agree, List of Russians does sound like it would be a rather large document.
I agree that "List of Notable Russians" would be more accurate and less ridiculous. Contains Mild Peril (talk) 13:51, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. List of Americans redirects to Lists of Americans - there are lots of them! I looked for List of Latvians, List of Ukrainians, List of Scots (my own native country) and a few others, and found that "List of..." rather than "List of notable..." seems to be the standard format. That said, it would do no harm to change the title because the old title would redirect to the new. I'm not really sure what the point of these lists is anyway. Contains Mild Peril (talk) 14:40, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Belarusophobia[edit]

(I thought I coined a neologism, but lo! there is 1 google hit!) The last ethnicity in the world which could have cause hatred, the quitest most peaceful, and thus almost always oppressed is once again denied existence, now by user:65.10.57.236, who stubbornly vandalized List of Belarusians and when met with resistance moved all belarusians here. I reverted this feat of Greater Russian chauvinism. If the user will persist, he will be blocked for vandalism, despite other reasonable contributions, until he learns to respect other ethnicities. 21:45, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This is last warning: if user:65.10.57.236 will proceed denying Belarusian ethnicity he will be banned for blatant disrespect of the whole nationality. mikka (t) 02:50, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Statesmen before and after 1917?[edit]

Is it really useful to have Russian statesmen (and only statesmen) split that way? Even if we define statesmen as officeholders, there were quite a few statesmen, e.g. Georgy Chicherin, Andrey Vyshinsky, Matvey Skobelev, Nikolai Vissarionovich Nekrasov, Nikolai Sukhanov, who occupied important positions both before and after the October Revolution of 1917. And since the section covers both officeholders and "general purpose politicians", it's really hard to tell where to put someone like Alexander Martynov or David Riazanov or Nikolai Valentinov. And what does one do with those who remained active in emigration after 1918-1920, sometimes, like in Boris Nikolayevsky's case, for many decades? Ahasuerus 17:12, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Disambig[edit]

This list needs to be renamed List of people from Russia given the extensive paramters defining this. 141.211.251.69 01:07, 14 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone make a list of possible name changes. Hopefully then we can agree on whichever is best suited and someone can implement that change. 141.211.251.69 22:37, 14 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Programming[edit]

"Yevgeniy Kharitonenkov, Programmer" doesn't have an adequate mentioning on the Internet and seems to be placed improperly here. Has the name to be removed from the article? Ss r 19:57, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV[edit]

This entire list is replete with people from nationalities and ethnic backgrounds who in no way, shape or form ever identified themselves as Russian. The whole premise that simply having been subjugated by or even claimed to part of whatever political entity governed at the time makes one a Russian is patently offensive.Awotter (talk) 10:43, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the previous tag[edit]

I would like the one who entered it to read the beginning of the entry:

This is a list of people associated with Imperial Russia, the Soviet Union, and Russia of today. For a long time Russia has been a multinational country, and many people of different nationalities contributed to its culture, to its glory, and to its sorrow. They may be ethnic Ukrainians (like Nikolai Gogol and Milla Jovovich), Georgians (like Stalin and Georgi Daneliya), Belarusians (like Kazimir Malevich), Tatars (like Rudolf Nureyev and Marat Safin), Azerbaijanis (like Kerim Kerimov and Uzeyir Hajibeyov), Jews (like Trotsky and Maya Plisetskaya), Poles (like Vaslav Nijinsky), Armenians (like Aram Katchaturian), Germans (like Catherine the Great), Danish (like Vitus Bering and Vladimir Dal), French (like Karl Briullov), Greeks (like John Capodistria), Romanians (like Mikhail Kheraskov), Frenchmen (like Marius Petipa), Dutchmen (like Sergius Witte), Portuguese (like Anton de Vieira), or, naturally, ethnic Russians. Sometimes their exact ancestry is unknown. Sometimes their formal nationality was written down at random or for political or other reasons. They may have emigrated or immigrated, and thus may appear in other "Lists of...", but nevertheless their names are linked to the words "Russia", "Russian".

Chess[edit]

I note that "Chess" is a subsection of "Sport". Surely chess is a separate category? It may have some features in common with sports, but sport is generally understood to refer to activities requiring some sort of physical skill, which chess does not. If Stephen Hawking, for example, wanted to play chess competitively I assume that this would be permitted even though he would be unable to move the chessmen himself and would need to play by instructing another person or a computer to carry out his move. This principle would obviously not apply to physical sports, even those in which the participant has time to pause and consider his next move (e.g. snooker, golf etc). Contains Mild Peril (talk) 13:39, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Added Andrei Arshavin to 'other' section as he is a notable sportsman that seemed to be missed out from the page, especially as page mentions pavlyuchenko and Sychev. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.22.98.242 (talk) 23:44, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Boldfacing and linking[edit]

There is no reason to boldface the captions of pictures. See WP:BOLDFACE. Linking last names only is a bad idea. Where articles exist, they are often disambiguation pages. Link the person`s full name instead. Thanks. User:Ground Zero. 1 December 2010

Relationship with e.g. List of Kazakhs / Relevant RfD[edit]

A redirect to this page, List of Soviet people has been nominated for discussion at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2013 January 11#List of Soviet people. Your comments there would be welcome.

The RfD has made me aware of this and similar pages, and I'm wondering what the relationship is between this list and e.g. List of Kazakhs for people of the Soviet era. For example Manshuk Mametova (1922-1943) an ethnic Kazakh, and "first Soviet Asian woman to receive the Hero of the Soviet Union of WWII" appears only on List of Kazakhs, not where people looking for notable Soviet people will look for her.
