Gordon[1] 4 A big blue 4-6-2 tender engine who works on the North Western Railway. He is one of the fastest and strongest engines on Sodor and his main task is to pull the railway's express train, which leads him to feel superior at times. He is occasionally used on goods trains, much to his disliking as he believes that these that are below him. He is Flying Scotsman's brother and Spencer's cousin. James[1] 5 A red 2-6-0 mixed-traffic tender engine who works on the North Western Railway. He is proud of his splendid red paintwork but tends to be vain, boastful, and overconfident, and does not like getting dirty. Percy[1] 6 A little green 0-4-0ST engine who works on the North Western Railway. He was first brought to Sodor to help run the railway while Gordon, James, and Henry went on strike and later became a station pilot at Knapford. Following the renovation of New Harbour, Percy was moved permanently to Thomas' Branch Line, where he now works as a goods engine. Emily[2] 12 An emerald 4-2-2 tender engine who works on the North Western Railway. When she first arrived on the Island of Sodor, she took Thomas' coaches Annie and Clarabel by mistake, much to Thomas' dismay to the shock of the other engines. Because of her bravery in saving Oliver from a nasty accident, she also has her own set of coaches given to her. Emily may be bossy and irritating sometimes like the other engines, she can also be a really useful engine. She works mostly on the Main Line in odd jobs and mixed-traffic duties and once ran the Misty Valley Branch Line. Nia[2] 18 An orange 2-6-2T engine from Kenya who works on the North Western Railway. She used to work on the East African Railways and came to Sodor after befriending and accompaning Thomas during journey around the world. Toby 7 A brown square 0-6-0 tram engine who works on the North Western Railway. He used to work on a tramway between Lower Arlesburgh and Arlesdale End, before being bought by the Fat Controller after his line closed down to run the tramroad to Ffarquhar Quarry. Duck 8 A 0-6-0PT engine who works on the North Western Railway and the Great Western Railway. One thing you may not know about Duck is that his real name is Montague. Montague goes by "Duck" because some engines say he "waddles", but he doesn't really waddle. In fact, Duck likes his nickname better than Montague. He thinks that there are two ways of doing things, the Great Western way and the wrong way. Donald and Douglas 9 and 10 A pair of black 0-6-0 tender engines who work on the North Western Railway from Scotland. They tend to work together on the railway, although they can be argumentative. Oliver 11 A green 0-4-2T engine who works on the North Western Railway and the Great Western Railway. He made a daring escape to Sodor before being scrapped and was almost caught at the last moment. Diesel[7] A black 0-6-0 diesel engine who originates from the Mainland, and is the first standard gauge diesel to have ever returned on Sodor. He has an oily, devious, scheming, and malicious nature and holds a grudge against the steam engines. Initially, he was sent away for bad behaviour, but after a number of return visits, he eventually becomes a permanent member of the North Western Railway. City of Truro 3440 A famous 4-4-0 tender engine from the Great Western Railway, who once visited the Island of Sodor. He is one of the three real-world tender engines to have appeared in the TV series. In the episode "Gordon & the Famous Visitor", he is only referred to as "The Famous Engine", although a banner outside the sheds features his name and number. Flying Scotsman 4472 One of the three real-world tender engines to have appeared in the TV series. He works on the Mainland and is Gordon's younger brother. He has two tenders: one for coal and water, and one for water. In addition, Flying Scotsman has been described as the world's famous steam locomotive. Stepney 55 A 0-6-0T engine who lives and works on the Bluebell Railway. Rusty saved him from being scrapped. His friendly, enthusiastic attitude makes him a welcome visitor on the Fat Controller's railway. LB&SCR A1 class[10]
D261 A big green diesel engine who once visited the North Western Railway on loan from British Railways. He was brought to Sodor to help the other engines. He sucked in an inspector's bowler hat through his air intake, which lead to his engine failing. Afterwards, he was sent away in disgrace, leaving behind "a rather nasty smell, and a battered bowler hat". British Rail Class 40
Derek A large green diesel engine who is known for his initial "teething" troubles. He was not officially named until merchandise was released. He is friends with Bill and Ben and works for the Sodor China Clay Company. British Rail Class 17

Sonny 1842 A 0-6-0WT engine from the Mainland who brought his two owners, Baz and Bernie, to Sodor to steal an invention from the Technology Fair. After meeting Thomas and helping out at the fair, Sonny wanted to be a really useful engine rather than a thief. Sodor Construction Company[edit]

In Series 6, a new set of characters was introduced called "The Pack". The characters were devised by then-producer Phil Fehrle with the intention of being turned into a spin-off series, possibly as a rival to HIT Entertainment's other successful show and brand Bob the Builder. This spin-off was partially filmed alongside the seventh series the following year but was not aired. The few completed episodes were released direct-to-DVD in 2006.
