Hi Paul, welcome to Wikipedia! there are lots of conventions all over the place, but don't worry to much. If you have some questions about wikipedia, you can ask in the wikipedia:Village pump.

One of those pesky but useful convention is that we make the name of the articles in sigular. That way, we don't run the risk of creating the article nucleons when the nucleon article already exist. The software can understand [[nucleon]]s, and when it is something harder you can use [[galaxy|galaxies]] that is rendered as galaxies.
