Blank page[edit]

Please do not replace Wikipedia pages with blank content. Blank pages are harmful to Wikipedia because they have a tendency to confuse readers. If it is a duplicate article, please redirect it to an appropriate existing page. If the page has been vandalised, please revert it to the last legitimate version. If you feel that the content of a page is inappropriate, please edit the page and replace it with appropriate content. If you believe there is no hope for the page, please see the deletion policy for how to proceed. Thanks for contributing to Wikipedia! Sasquatch′TC 09:05, July 29, 2005 (UTC)

Ahh, I see, your trying to move the page. This has a couple of problems: a) This is the English Wikipedia and we prefer anglacized names 2) please refer the correct way of moving a page using the "move" button. Thanks!
Also, please discuss any page moves on the appropriate talk pages before attempting to do so. Regards! Sasquatch′TC 09:11, July 29, 2005 (UTC)
I wouldn't leave a page blank :) thanks for the note.

Wikimania 2007[edit]

Hi MatthewS.,

Wikimania 2007, which is being held in Taipei, Taiwan on August 3-5, is offering opportunities for travel scholarships to Wikimania for active users of Wikimedia projects from the continent of Africa. Although the original scholarship deadline has passed, please, if you are interested, you may still apply at Scholarships. Sincerely yours, Cary Bass16:48, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Etisalat Egypt, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Etisalat Egypt is blatant advertising for a company, product, group, service or person that would require a substantial rewrite in order to become an encyclopedia article.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Etisalat Egypt, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Mobinillogo.gif)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Mobinillogo.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 13:30, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Egyptian pound[edit]

I wonder if you'd mind providing a reference for your transliteration of جنيه to gineih (rather than gunaih) in Egyptian pound. There seems to be some degree of uncertainty on the most appropriate form. Thanks, Dove1950 22:38, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article مصر. has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Foreign language title. Possibly a redirect to .eg which includes the information here, but difficult to foresee anyone using the search term مصر in English language Wikipedia.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Haruth (talk) 17:48, 21 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your contributed article, مصر.[edit]

Hello, I notice that you recently created a new page, مصر.. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as yourself. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page - .eg. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will to continue helping improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at .eg - you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think that the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. RadioFan (talk) 18:13, 21 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Some help with Arabic translation please?[edit]

Hi Matthew. I'm hoping to add a picture or two to the article Tourist Landmark of the Resistance. There are a few rather striking images on their website, but of course they can't be re-used without permission. Explaining the implications of Wikimedia's licensing is difficult even when there are no language barriers, so I thought it would make sense to email them in Arabic rather than in English. If I draft a short email in English explaining what is being asked for, would you be able to translate it into Arabic? If they reply, their reply might also need translation back into English, for example so that the OTRS people can see whether they agreed or not. Many thanks if you can help. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 12:56, 7 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Chipsy[edit]

A tag has been placed on Chipsy, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia for multiple reasons. Please see the page to see the reasons. If the page has since been deleted, you can ask me the reasons by leaving a message on my user talk page.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. SuperEditor (talk) 18:36, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for File:Chipsy.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Chipsy.png. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click the "Edit" tab at the top of the page and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 14:05, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Chipsy.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Chipsy.png, which you've sourced to www.chipsyegypt.com. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 15:36, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I hope you are well and thriving!! WikiAfrica has just put out a call for two Wikipedians in Residence. One in Cape Town at WikiAfrica, at the Africa Centre; and the other for WikiAfrica Cameroon in Douala, at doual’art. If you are interested, please contact either Marilyn [marilyn.doualabell@doualart.org] for the WikiAfrica Cameroon call or Isla [islahf@africacentre.net] for the WikiAfrica position in Cape Town.

If you are not interested in applying, I would be very grateful if you could spread this call far and wide among your networks to ensure that both projects get excellent candidates. Here is the link for the information page: http://www.wikiafrica.net/two-wikipedians-in-residence-for-africa/

Egyptian currency[edit]

Dear Matthew, as of 2010, no currency value less than 0.25 pounds is accepted in Egypt. Why do you claim that they are still used? Also, stop editing the Arabic spelling of Millièmes, as it is officially spelled with two Arabic ل, not one, as you do it. Also, in the Alexandrian accent, the definitive article is more likely pronounce [el] before /ɡ/. The assimilation of the definitive article in Egyptian Arabic before some consonants is a matter of preference. Some people never even assimilate it, some assimilate it differently from Arabic rules. --Mahmudmasri (talk) 05:55, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Bedayaa requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Can you help verify translations of articles from Arabic[edit]

Hello,

Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from Arabic to English Wikipedia?

File:Language icon.svg

This would involve evaluating a translated article on English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original Arabic article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:

There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including Arabic , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from Arabic. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.

If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:

All you have to do, is compare the English article to the Arabic article, and mark it "Pass" or "Fail" (templates {{Pass}} and {{Fail}} may be useful). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then marking it "Pass", that's even better, but it isn't required.)

If you can help, please let me know. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 09:38, 30 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Egyptian Arabic[edit]

Hi Matthew, i am a fellow Egyptian who's pro an independent Masry language. I also believe that the correct pronunciation of the word is Masry as in Masry Wikipedia and El Masry el youm, El Masry of port-said...etc. The term Masry is the one used between Egyptians, while Masri is more used between the Khaleejis in their English written articles when they refer to us.

Also, if we are saying in the article that our language is written in both Arabic and Latin alphabets, why can't we write the name in latin in the infobox?

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Points to note:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made;
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes and work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. June 2021[edit]

Stop icon You may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you use talk pages for inappropriate discussions, as you did at Talk:Demi Lovato. Laplorfill (talk) 05:04, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in gender-related disputes or controversies or in people associated with them. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Levantine Arabic FAC[edit]

Hi Matthew, I nominated Levantine Article for FAC. As you contributed to Egyptian Arabic in the past and given your knowledge of Arabic, I thought you could be interested in reviewing this nomination. Thanks for any help you can provide. A455bcd9 (talk) 08:29, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

My edit summary when reverting Egyptian pound[edit]

I thought I should explain my cryptic edit note. When I wrote "these are not reliable sources", I was referring to Investopedia and XE.COM being cited. I have no idea what I was looking at, as you certainly didn't write it in your edit summary. Obviously a stray cosmic ray and reality has been reinstated as at the last backup. Notice of edit warring noticeboard discussion[edit]

Information icon Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion involving you at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring regarding a possible violation of Wikipedia's policy on edit warring. August 2022[edit]

Stop icon with clock
You have been blocked from editing for a period of 48 hours for edit warring and violating the three-revert rule, as you did at Egyptian pound. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions.
During a dispute, you should first try to discuss controversial changes and seek consensus. If that proves unsuccessful, you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  Bbb23 (talk) 13:54, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

Newly created account TheCurrencyGuy is bent on ruining the Egyptian pound page and forcing his way without FIRST reaching consensus. I am not one to “edit war” as this has never happened in my 18 years on Wikipedia. Please protect the page from vandalism. Thanks. MatthewS. (talk) 14:09, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

Both of you were edit warring, and both of you are blocked. Content disagreements are not vandalism, whether there is consensus or not. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 14:25, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Egyptian pound. This means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be although other editors disagree. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Points to note:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made;

If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. Bgsu98 (talk) 18:09, 24 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Egyptian pound[edit]

Hello.

I don't want to make an enemy of you, we both got a little carried away with ourselves. I would like to collaborate in order to reach a satisfactory result. TheCurrencyGuy (talk) 17:01, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Notice of Dispute resolution noticeboard discussion[edit]

This message is being sent to let you know of a discussion at the Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard regarding a content dispute discussion you may have participated in. Content disputes can hold up article development and make editing difficult. You are not required to participate, but you are both invited and encouraged to help this dispute come to a resolution.

Please join us to help form a consensus. Thank you!

Turkey vs. Türkiye[edit]

Hi! You recently changed the word "Turkey" to "Türkiye". However, Wikipedia policy is to use the WP:COMMONNAME of a country name, unless it's in a specific technical context that requires the official name to be used. The common name of this country in the English language remains "Turkey", so I've reverted your edit. Please don't make any similar changes without first establishing consensus with other editors that common English usage has changed (for example, as "Mumbai" has replaced "Bombay" in common usage) — The Anome (talk) 10:39, 24 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. Further to the above, (1) do not imagine that consensus requires your consent or that you have a veto. (2) Look at what you're doing. You added 46,731 bytes to the article by massive duplication of content. NebY (talk) 16:47, 5 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I undid it because of the duplication. That was unintentional. But the symbols I know are all valid, with sources. I’ll be back to include them all. No idea why some have to force only their way and nothing else. MatthewS. (talk) 16:54, 5 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
