Untitled[edit]

I'm not particularly believing the claim that communicators have a range of over a light year. If someone can give an example please put it back in. --JiMternet 19:45, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure the canon distance is 500 km. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.16.224.110 (talk) 20:28, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Communicator badges[edit]

There is a reference to a first and a second version of said badges and their use at specific seasons of DS9 and other shows, but no clear statement of how different they are exists at the current version of the article. Luis Dantas (talk) 06:23, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:TNG combadge.JPG[edit]

Image:TNG combadge.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Assessment[edit]

I have added a quality assessment rating and importance rating to this article. Feel free to change them as the article improves! Also, feel free to add more issues to the list below, and strike them out (strike) when they're completed. — OranL (talk) 00:16, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notable issues[edit]

  • The article needs some sources. (Perhaps from the Trek Encyclopedia or another such publication?)
  • The existing references need cleanup.

Communicator Range and Mechanism[edit]

The current page states, "Communicators use subspace transmissions that do not conform to normal rules of physics in that signals can bypass EM interference, and the devices allow nearly instantaneous communication at distances that would otherwise require more time to traverse." I've not seen any source to substantiate the claim that handheld communicators use subspace for transmission (shipboard does), nor have I ever seen a handheld communicator used in any situation in which faster than light communication would be beneficial. Communicators don't get used to communicate beyond planetary orbit. In the original series, a cobbled together communicator appeared to work on an EM frequency. The statement on the page does not have a source for its claim. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pooua (talk) 18:38, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Person-to-Person (?)[edit]

The article should explain if communicators contact a specific party based on voice instructions, or if the communicator contacts "everybody" on a party line, and of course this explanation must be sourced to a Reliable Source. Also, it should explain how the system determines which communicator or station to contact. If Kirk and Spock swap communicators, will they get each other's communications? And do communicators have any personalization so their owners can get the right one quickly? —Anomalocaris (talk) 20:48, 4 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Linking to Humane's AI pin?[edit]

The article should contain a link to the recently released Ai Pin from Humane Inc. which was launched on November 9, 2023. The device seems clearly inspired by the Star Trek Communicator. Ckepper (talk) 18:01, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
